1989 911 (930) Turbo Values?

I'm trying to sell my 1989 911 (930) Turbo http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=353155

I'm asking $35K for an immaculate car with only 56K miles...

What do you think of the price? Is it reasonable?

Any opinions or advice would be appreciated!

I think your price is reasonable for a low mileage '89 turbo. On the down side I think is the color. White is not as desireable as other colors and I think the boxed in rockers and cutouts for the rear brake cooling is going to limit your market. Still $35K for a low mileage '89 turbo is a good deal.

I hope to be in the market for an '89 Turbo eventually -- and I love white, but will be looking for a bone stock car.

Personally, I don't like the modifications on this car (I especially dislike lowered cars) -- if you find someone who likes exactly what has been done to the car, I think you'll have a sale since your price sounds reasonable.

Modifying a car is a very "personal" thing; one person's idea about what is the "perfect" modification, doesn't mean the wider market will find it appealing. Expect it to take longer to sell a non-stock car.

I would also suggest changing the wording about the A/C, the part in the ad "The AC needs to be charged. The AC has not been used in 3 years." It would sound better to say "the A/C does not work; it has not been used in 3 years." With the current comments, it implies that it "just needs to be charged" -- which leaves a person asking, why doesn't the seller spend the relatively few dollars to charge the system and sell the car with a working A/C system?

Good points competentone....

Actually I'm pretty sure the AC just needs to be charged. I haven't had a chance to do that yet- It will cost about $200 in Freon and $100 for labor. I'll get that done soon, and note it in the ad after I do that.

The car has only been lowered to the European Original Ride hight. I probably should be more specific about that: You can see in the original pictures taken 8 years ago that the car looked kind of high. That's why I had it corner balanced and adjusted the ride height.

I didn't do any of the mods (other than the 18inch rims). It's all I could find 9 years ago.

I should probably take off the larger intercooler, and install the original one. I know I can get $1200 for that intercooler in the parts classified pretty fast.

How do you feel about bolt on mods- Like intercoolers or 18 inch rims, when the original parts are available? If you had a 911 turbo with a larger more efficient intercooler would you remove it and go back to the stock one designed in 1977? The going price for the stock (1978--1989) intercoolers is about $50. I'm think that's pretty indicative of what they are worth! ;-)

Your comment were very helpful and useful. Thanks!

The average buyer looks for a stock car. It's a sad fact. The turbo mods are what everyone does, but everyone would rather do it themselves and be reasonably confident that the engine hasn't seen a ton of boost before. IMHO what hurts the value most are the body mods and the paint work which are not easily reversible.

My advice is to keep advertising it as is and not trying to change much. Fix the a/c and be ready to drop the price some more. If you go below 30, it will move, no question. I know, 5k is painful, but 5k is not even 15% off what you are asking now.

One more thought I had was the fact that the 993 is in the same price range these days and you can get similar power with a N/A engine and much improved creature comforts. That's what steered me away from a late 80s turbo.

To give you a data point, I had an 89 Turbo (also GP white with the painted white fuchs) that I sold about 2 years ago for over what you are asking. My car had 61k on it, and was in very good condition as well and but only had some minor modifications (1 bar spring and aftermarket exhaust)

I agree with aigel, I think what is maybe keeping people away is that it has non-original parts (i.e. front bumper, boxed rockers and brake vents) and the fact that it was repainted. This will likely drive down the value in many potential buyers eyes. It seems people more and more want original looking examples. I think this has more an effect than the performance mods.

Whether or not you have maintenance records will have a big effect, especially since it is a turbo.

However, I would not drop the car to below $30k unless you absolutely NEED to sell the car. And if you do, let me know as I would be very interested in buying it.

A suggestion... Take some pics with the original fuchs on the car, it may resonate with some potential buyers (as I am not particularly fond of the Kinesis wheels, and would prefer the factory wheels).

Good luck with the sale!

I agree with the above statement. If you can hold out at $35k, I think you can sell it to just the right person. Dropping it below $30k is giving it away...unless you just have to dump it quick.

I too feel the body mods and repaint are holding this car back from a quick sale at your reasonable price. I personally love cat claws and boxed rockers, but I think that look is getting a bit dated and most buyers of 20+ year old 911's are after stock cars.

However, I still think this car is a darn nice car for $35k. Change out the rims to the factory Fuchs, insure that the car is well presented to potential buyers (keep it washed, waxed and vacuumed) and market it well. It'll sell.

Good Luck!

If it were all original, with those miles, it would have sold very quickly (within a week) at $35K.

Turbo

I agree with the above statements. I have owned and sold many 911's from this period. My experience is that people looking for turbos from this period want the car stock. The body mods distract from this otherwise desirable G50 5 speed.
Good Luck, Mark

Took me a long long time to sell my 89 turbo which had just a couple grand fewer miles then yours but it also had quite a few mods which I thought were tasteful.

fondeportago 07-24-2007 09:48 PM

it's a beautiful car despite the cosmetic modifications. i just think that the 930 market isn't as big as, say the 993 market which at 35K is its main competition.

i think your car's modifications made its small market even smaller, but i don't think you should compromise further on your price.

hang in there. it's a beautiful car.

just my $.02 worth

out of curiosity, your viper link shows the 930 with its engine out in the shot with the Lotus. what was that about?

That's me replacing the clutch in 1998 when I bought the car.

mkaraoglan 08-03-2007 11:28 AM

wow. gulp. brave man! how's the selling going?
i wonder--do you do body work? wi onder if it make the car more sale-able to revert the side scoops to solid and remove the boxed rockers

ewave 08-03-2007 12:47 PM

No I don't do body work. I subbed all painting and fiberglass for the Viper out... I did all the parts removal and installation on it though.

I am putting the 930 back to stock (Intercooler, gages, and Fuch wheels). The boxed rockers just unbolt... But the air scoops would require un productive labor... Better to find someone who wants those (It's a pretty permanent mod) Or someone who wants to remove them their selves.. Thanks god it's not a slant nose... Seems those have really fallen out of favor.

I'll take new pictures and then I will list it on craigs list and ebay with a $34K reserve and a $35.5K buy it now
