Wife feeds the addiction
So the wife mentions the other day that she saw a "pretty" 911 Cab on a used lot on her route to work. The kind of lot where an 80's 911 is way out of place, probably some beater auction deal etc.
We happened to be out and about yesterday and stopped to look at it. The first thing I notice is the "Al Reed like" polishied look on the wheels. Given that, my first thought was that it's a good chance the previous owner may be more of an enthusiast rather than drive it in to the ground type owner. So, I looked around. 1987, 202,000 miles on the clock and the interior looks awesome, minor wear on the seats but no tears or rips. Stuffed behind the front seats are some vintage sheepskin seat covers that obviously protected the front seats for many years. All gaps are good, minor blemishes here and there (less than my car). The top looks ok, but the rear window is fogged and there are some tiny nics in the top. Would probably want to factor in a new top in the deal. I am pretty sure the color is Cassis. I spent a few minutes looking at it waiting for the sales pitch which never came. Must be a one man shop and he was busy inside selling a car to a customer. So the good thing is that I never got to get inside or look at the engine or start it up and look for smoke and all those things. I'm thinking if it had valve guide wear issues, that should have been addressed by now and my mechanic is just a mile or two up the road who could do a PPI. I don't need another 911! The wife would probably drive it back and forth to work for a few months until the novelty wore off. We did this a few years ago and we had an '80 SC that she drove to work. After a year or so she started to take the VW in favor of the creature comforts and I ended up selling the SC. I feel the need to go back and take a closer look - how does one stop these urges when you know that there is no practical reason to add a car like this to the stable? They claim KBB retail is 19,200 and they have it listed for $16,500. I bet someone could walk away with that for $10-11,000.
