Future Planning.....'89 Carrera value?

Well, I've only had my 89 Carrera for a year but I'm already looking down the road a bit. Here's the story (if anyone cares): Right now I have a new-ish Honda Accord as my daily driver and the 911 as my fun car. I drive the 911 as much as possible when there isn't snow on the ground here in N. Indiana - so 2-3 times a week on average (5-7K miles/yr.)

This formula works well, but I am thinking about going in a totally different direction with my daily driver. In about 2 years time I am thinking of replacing the Honda with more of a fun daily driver like the 2009 Camaro, the new Dodge Challenger, or maybe a Mustang. If that happens, I would have a performance car on a daily basis and I would want to change the "feel" of my P-car to something less powerful and more classic like an early targa or maybe even a Beck Speedster replica.

So....I'm wondering what kind of proceeds my 89 Carrera would bring if I were to sell it. Here's the run down:

1989 3.2 G50 Carrera Coupe - Guards Red/Black
good-to-very good condition (8.5/10 all around maybe)
everything works, zero oil leaks
92,000 miles (no rebuilds)
front+rear spoilers
7/8 Fuchs polished by Al Reed
Fabspeed bypass, M&K 1/1 exhaust, SW chip
H4 Headlights
Alpine stereo with 6 disc CD changer
Momo steering wheel

Questions:

What kind of price range would this fetch today?

Does this range figure to increase/decrease over the next couple of years?

Thanks for your input!!

I'll trade you my SC for it?

I think if you keep it in nice shape...yes, its going to pretty much just stay at it's current value. If you find the right buyer, you could probably get more than $20k, you have some nice mods there.

But we need to talk about something more important....I could have sworn I saw words like "Camaro" and "Mustang" in your post....dude, you need an intervention. We may have to take some strong action considering the severity of your affliction. I mean, it's one thing to be trading Porsches every so often...who doesn't do that...but now you're actually talking about (sic) American "muscle"? Please tell me you're kidding? Nevermind...this is too serious...I'll be up this weekend for an intervention...

No, not expecting it to go up - - just hoping for it to hold fairly steady. Also hoping the top end of the range might be a bit higher.

I dont think the top end will be much higher especially as you put on the miles

LOL - - howdy Doug! Hell yeah I'm serious! Haven't you seen Transformers yet? I just gotta have my own "Bumblebee" Camaro, man!!!!!

Hey, if you do come up here we should take a ride down to Bremen and tour the Special Edition (Beck Speedster/Spyder) plant. Wouldn't that be awesome?! I didn't even know they were there until this past weekend! The South Bend Tribune had a great writeup on them in the Sunday edition. I called and talked to Carey Hines (son of the founder Kevin Hines). He said they're technically not open on Saturdays but that he would gladly setup a special appointment on a Saturday. What do you think???

That's funny, because Ma called (to wish me a happy birthday) and told me about that article. She said she saved it for me to read. My brother really wants a 550 replica, so I wonder if he'll get back on the selling the Cayman S kick and try to get one? I'm sure one field trip would sway him!

I actually am coming up this weekend, but I'm sure it'll be busy with family affairs. My nephew and I share a birthday (yesterday, for the record ) and it's usually a good time for a summer family gathering...so that's this weekend. But I would like to get to see the plant sometime. Let me know if you plan on going sometime and maybe I can make a special trip?

Oh, and if you do decide to sell that car, let me know. I've just about got it in my mind to keep the SC for the long haul, but a good running G50 Carrera coupe would be about the only thing I might displace it for. (..especially one that has already started the "backdating". )

Cheers!

Well, Happy Birthday old boy! That's cool that you guys have a nice family gathering around the birthdays. Maybe just keep the plant tour in mind for the next time you're in town and give me a holler. Carey said they can schedule a visit anytime so it's no problem. Now that I know they are down there, I'm not sure I can keep myself away -- so I may have to go by myself in the near future, BUT I would gladly go again if you are in town!

Sure, I'll let you know if I decide to sell the Carrera. I can't believe it's even crossing my mind, but it is. I had my 80 SC for NINE YEARS before deciding to make a change.....since then I get the itch once a year!! I guess I have started to enjoy sampling the wide variety of P-cars that are available.

Will do! I definitely want to get to see the place. If you go, report here!

Right there with ya brother...had my 944 for just over 5 years (put over 100k miles on it myself). Since then, other than that '72T that became the "project" over the years, I don't think I kept anything more than a couple of years. I'm kicking myself for not keeping some of the cars, but if I hadn't I wouldn't have been able to experience all the others. What'cha gonna do?!?!?

I will say, however, that now I'm beginning to think about cars that I'd like to keep for a long time. I'm trying to find a way to make the SC part of my dream garage, but I'll admit its a bit of a struggle. Your Carrera, however...

As someone else stated, I think 18-21 is a fair range. I wouldn't sell either, but if you must, a few tips: You could get more if you part out the fuchs, chip, and exhaust; especially if you have the stock parts. I think the price of the car would be in the same range. If your gonna sell, I would do it now. The values, according to Excellence, have gone up the past few years, but not enough to make a difference. To a lot of people, anything over 100k in mileage is high despite the age. The car is more attractive at 92K

JB,

Thanks for your comments - you make a good point about parting out the mods. Most likely I would first attempt to ask a bit more for the car with the mods in place. If no one bites, then I could always put the H5's and stock exhaust/chip back on and lower the price (the Fuchs that are on the car are the only wheels I have).

If I did sell the car, my hope would be that it would go to a fellow Pelican who would recognize the value of those mods (not to mention the time & energy required to install them) and was willing to pay a slight premium for them.

Or if I figure out what I'm looking for in my next P-car, I might be able to work a trade which I've done a few times in past.

My thoughts are if you want to keep a fun car then keep this one. I think these have hit the bottom of the depreciation curve and unless you need the bucks for something else then keep it. Trading to another is always an unknown as you never really know what you are getting. With a history with the one you own now you have a fair idea of what is likely to come up. I am even keeping my 3.2 although I live in another country and get to drive it for about 3 weeks per year. Good ones are tough to find and no depreciation means they are worthwhile keepers unless you need to free the funds.
