Value of a 1970 911 T built as RS clone?
 

Hello all.

I am trying to assess the value of a 1970 911 T built as an RS clone that I am considering buying. The particulars are:

1970 911 T

Motor has been recently rebuilt, now displaces 2.7L. Has Zenith carbs.

Body was modified with SC flares. Body appears to be solid and rust free. Paint is good but not excellent. The car was originally blue but is now white.

Interior was done as per RS, though using rubber mats on floor rather than the thin carpeting typically seen.

Suspension is stock and seems to be a little "tired".

Car does seem to have some minor electrical problems: turn signal, back lights and clock all need work.

Here is the biggest concern: it is a Sportomatic, with leakage at both the shifter and the oil pump at the motor.

How'd they do that? It's not a Motor Meister rebuild is it?

It was a local (Portland) shop that re-did it. From outward signs it seems to be solid work: 150 PSI in all cylinders, no leaks.

EDIT: I just reread your post, and considering the fact that it is a Sportomatic (yuck) and that it's leaky, you will be pouring some money into this one. And reselling a Sporto can be a nightmare! I'd pay around 10k if you really like it. Personally, I would pass on it because you can find a similar example with a manual transmission for that kind of money.
I hope the seller doesn't read this because he might hunt me down!

I think 15k is a little on the high side considering the electricals. A 911 with an electrical system that's finicky usually stays finicky until you get in there and clean it up. Probably why the current owner didn't take care of it. You also have to ask yourself: if the current owner was ok driving around with no turn signals, what else was overlooked? Another consideration would be that a car modified to RS look won't appreciate at the same rate as an unmolested example.

All that being said, if it checks out in the major departments: engine, rust, etc. you should go with your gut.
