Why so cheap?

This is under the Marketplace Discussion as well, but I figured this forum gets more traffic. I am wondering why this car is being sold with such a low "Buy It Now" price. What could be wrong? He says that it doesn't smoke or leak oil at all. I'm confused.

The dents and chips, the 150K miles with no mention of oil consumption and history, the duct tape targa bar seal, the torn seat, and the fact that the only mainenace history he mentions is changing the plugs and oil might be start as to why it doesn't have the highest price.

Of course it could also be that it is the end of the summer, he needs the money, and it looking for a quick sell.

Edit: Oh and the fact that the dash is messed up.

Whenever anyone says the odometer doesn't work and hasn't for some time has to expect pricing behind wholesale. If he can prove the mileage thru receipts with dates, then he might be able to convince me that he has only put 3000 miles on the car since he bought it.

8900 seems about right if the motor is good and neri's comments apply.

The buyer is quite...enthusiastic and optimistic. Must be all the wives (sorry, couldn't resist). I'd probably stay far away from it, even at that price.

When I was looking for my car, I was told every Sc or Carrera is 20 thousand dollar car.... It's just how you get there. I found this to be good advise.

That's not that cheap.

$9Gs for an old car is a good chunk of change. Esp. one that has as many issues as that one undoubtedly has.

Cars generally get cheaper to buy as they get older. Part of the reason is they start to need more and more work to get up to good operating condition. There is a lot of deferred maintenance and repair work needed on most 30 year old cars.

Plus, SCs are getting price pressure from Carreras above now.

$9K is a bad deal for this car, IMO. It would be better to spend a little more and get a MUCH better car, which can easily be done.

For example, I just glanced in the For Sale section and in 5 seconds, on the first page, found this much better deal, for $3,000 more. This is $3,000 well spent, IMO.

It might SEEM expensive, but from the pictures it looks like he's starting the process of gluing quarters all over it, so that's kind of like a cash-back incentive.

So at what point does a car become worth more as parts than as a whole?

Let's do some numbers:

$9000 for the car
$1000 for a new dash
$1000 for new German carpets and installation
$1000 for recovering seats
$500 for dent removal and a pro detail.
$500 for Targa seals (is that right??)
$3000 for misc mechanical issues that these cars all have.
$1000 for stuff that you thought you had covered, but missed...

So, total numbers:

$17,000.

You still then only have a car worth maybe $10,000 to $11,000 due to those miles and odometer that hasn't been working...

$17k will buy an extremely nice, low mileage SC...

These cars will always be worth $8000 to $10,000. Someone always has $8000 laying around to buy a 911. Drive it a year and 3000 miles without spending a nickle on it and then flip it for what you paid for it to the next uneducated person that feels they must have a 911 but can only afford $8000.

911's are so robust that you can abuse the s**t out of them and they will still start and drive down the road under their own power. Plus, they have enough value in them (unlike the 944 market right now) that if you have to dump $2000 into a clutch, you're still only spending 10 to 25% of the value of the car on a repair.

Just my $.02

Despite its Targa-ness, I'm still intrigued. Is there anyone/anywhere around Salt Lake City that could do a PPI for me?

Watch out for hidden issues on ebay 911s. Oil leaks, etc. At 152K miles, some kind of rebuild is around the corner. I wouldn't buy one without a radiator-fan front oil cooler. That is a weakness in the pre-mid80s cars.

These 25 yo cars are toys. You will get to $20K fast unless you work on the car yourself.

I agree with "the" that targe listed on Pelican looks like a pretty reasonable deal and a much better deal then the eBay car
