help with possible 75 911s purchase
I have the opportunity to purchase a 1975 911s sunroof coupe, 79000 supposed original miles in Talbot yellow? Paint seems fair (needs a detail and can see a few stone chips on front). Haven't seen the car in person but photos show a presentable driver, windup windows, driver side stainless rear view mirror, tan color interior, vinyl seat bolsters and cloth centers (drivers bottom needs work). Never owned a Porsche before but looks like a decent car for $8900 (will need tires though). Mechanically supposedly very strong, engine, trans, brakes etc. Shows few drops of oil after sits. Private seller and seems like an honest family guy. Anyway - I could use some advice. Can someone give me some pertinent information and steer me in the right direction? Thanks

This series Porsche while a very solid car it was hampered with nagging issues with the engine [pollution equipment] and the body [rust]. I would strongly recommend you have a Pre-purchase inspection of the car by a qualified Porsche mechanic. Your $9000 purchase price could escalate quite quickly.

Yes, what Luke said. If it is a California car then it has more polution gagets than Professor Peabodys pocket watch. PPI by an expert is recommended.

good info - anybody else?
After posting last night read a few more posts and seems like these year cars weren't necessarily the best. The $8900 price might not be very attractive after all. The car is out near Seattle so not now a California car but very well could have started life that way. There is no air pump on it but looks like a bracket for one is present in engine compartment. I will discuss with owner about getting a PPI. Anybody know a reputable shop near Seattle? Also, where are typical rust areas?

john walkers workshop has a really good reputation.
as far as rust on a mid year car, the only parts to worry about are the metal ones. |

jowjup,
Follow the advice given, and get a thorough PPI, but don't be put off just because the car is a 75. Yes, the midyear cars have a bad rep., but that doesn't mean this one is a problem. The "killer" of these cars were the thermal reactors required on California cars, not the smog pump. My 75 never had the reactors and was never a problem. Checking the history of the car, checking if it has reactors, will alleviate some anxiety. If the engine has not gone through high cycles of heat, it is likely the loose stud problem will be moot. Minor oil leaks are not uncommon. The PPI will answer your questions of doubt. The price asked seems very fair for a car that has been well maintained, has low mileage, and passes the rust/mechanical inspections. Midyear cars can be great--still relatiavely light weight, classic style, and smooth power. They are a potential "bargain."
