930 vs 996tt owner input required
 

Own a 1986 930 and am considering selling it in favor of a 2002 996tt.Looking for input from any who would have the time to enlighten me.Good year or bad,inherent problems?Am 55 years of age and use these cars on sunny weekends and so far just short trips.Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I've owned both vintages. Had a 79 & 89 930; 02 996 tt and upgraded to a 05 GT2.

1. The 930 cars different in themselves because of pre and post smog controls and 4 spd vs 5 spd and are the traditional single turbo hot rods. Have that "Porsche" road feel and handling qualities. Some describe this a "seat of the pants" driving. Easy to get more HP but has its limits as far as reliability.

2. The 996tt is completely different in character, power, 4whl drive; little turbo lag, and fundamentally a strong new driving platform. Some call the experience as more refined and civil. The 997tt has has taken this to a new 480 hp entry level street hot rod.

3. With a 996 it is easy to get 450 hp. Price ranges from 50-70K seem reasonable and look to be very good buys. Unless you are a real do it your self car guy, don't be temped to buy junk because repair costs can be expensive for cars that have been badly neglected.

4. I sold my 02 996 w/ 20K mi for $73K pvt party and had 3 people lined up to buy it. Blk/Blk w/ carbon, spt seats, 1 bar spring, no nicks, dings, etc. Replaced it w/ 05 GT2 w/ 6K miles and all the goodies.

Personally I'm one who stays close to stock other than mods that can be easily reversed. The best advise I can offer and the single most important issue when buying a pre-owned P car is a good and complete PPI with a competent Porshce resourse. Be fussy about maintenance records; owner history; paint work; and how was the previous owner drove the beast.

I currently own both.....did you post this question on another forum....this is the same question I responded to before. At any rate, I currently own both an 87 factory 930S slantnose cabriolet in concours condition, and an 02 996TT X50. Each car has its own distinctive personality.

The 87 is raw and gives you feedback for every little bump and rut in the road. It has no power anything and gives you the feel of a true raw sports car. The 02 is substantially different....more sophisticated, advanced, and a lot easier to drive. You might say that owning both is like being a Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. When I want raw, I drive the 930...when I want comfort and top end speed, I drive the TT. The TT has become a daily driver. The 930 is a weekend put-the-top-down and hit the mountain roads fun car. Since it's a 930 turbo, it spools at around 3800 and can get you in trouble if you hit it on a curve whereas the TT sticks like glue. Totally different animals. You learn to appreciate each for its own personality.
