Lots of "Parting Out" posts???
 

Is it me or are there a lot of "parting out 1986 Carerra" etc, etc posts lately?
Do a quick search of the classifieds and there are 15 cars on the first page.

Are these Katrina cars or just the sign of the times?

I know there are lots of 911's around, especially Carrera's(both good and bad), and its good for me looking for used parts, but I wonder what the attrition rate is and if its just a case of time and the market on Carrera's in general.

Seems like a new bottom end or fender bender makes parting the sum of the parts a better bet than getting it back on the road.

These Carrera's and SC's are still not collectible yet and there are plenty of good cars available for decent prices if you are patient.

Good motor rebuilds are in the $8,000 to $12,000 price range and fixing/painting a car correctly with major body damage and or heavy rust can run just as much. So, if you have a car with a hard hit or a huge motor repair looming, parting it out is probably more profitable than fixing it or trying to sell it damaged or broken.

Once these SC's and Carreras hit the appreciation rate that the long hoods are at right now, you'll see less and less cars for parting out and more people sinking the money into them to keep them running.

I think the SC/Carreara Targa's are the ones really going away in large numbers...
Folks seem to cut & gut those in a heartbeat so I see fewer of those being around in the future!

How many SC's/Carrera's do you anticipate leaving the roads due to parting out/accidents each year.

I've noticed quite a few low mileage premium condition models heading overseas.

I know of three SC's that were totaled out in the last month:(

Let's face it guys, our cars are worth more in parts than as a whole. I crashed my 964 and instead of repairing it and dumping more money into it I'm selling off the pieces. It just made more financial sense. I'm pretty much breaking even after it's all said and done.

I can go out and buy a new honda for 14K. It gets 40 mpg and if treated correctly 200k before it dies. Is it the same as driving a 911?, of course not. It is all about demographics. Younger folks, I believe, don't get the Porsche experience. Spend more and get a Subaru with 300 h.p that is blindingly fast, that is what is happening in my neighborhood. To spend 10k to have an engine rebuilt? I never have gotten that but I own a 911 anyway.
We live in different times. Three years ago I owned a 1971S, yes matching numbers engine. Could not give the thing away for $15K. Now look what they bring, I don't get that either. I like the fact the '84 thru '86 cars are down because I am looking for another coupe and the time is right. I have made several folks angry at me for low offers. I am not jerky about it but it is as one of you mentioned "sign of the times" and the cost of engine and transmission rebuilds.

I agree, look at what is happening to longhoods its crazy. At some point once the economy returns and demand for a "second fun car " comes around again I would imagine the price should start rising for Carrera's. Whats funny about it is once a car is parted out the tub needs to find a home and it will most likely be cut up or sold to someone who wants to build a RS and is back looking for all the parts that once were attached.
