Shoulld I pass?

I am interested in a 1987 911 Targa (Black with tan leather interior) and I wanted feedback as to whether I should pass on the car or move forward with negotiations. The car has just under 70,000 miles and has not been in a wreck. The exterior and interior of the car are in excellent shape. The paint shines and the interior is free from rips and other abrasions. The seller is asking $21,800 OBO for the car.

After discussion with the owner I have learned that the local, well-respected Porsche repair shop has recommended a new clutch (not necessary at this time). The owner has also told me that the car burns oil at approximately 1 quart for every 500-600 miles. Based on my research on this and other sites, I would guess that a top end rebuild might be necessary. Assuming true, I would be looking at $5-7,000 in repairs on the car (clutch and top end). I do plan on taking the car in for a PPI to make sure that my worries are addressed and to receive a proper estimate of the costs.

With this information, should I walk away from a car like this one? I am concerned that even if I get the owner to adjust the price of the car to cover some of the repairs that I will still be purchasing a car that is not worth the money. Moreover, there is always the repairs that will crop up once the engine has been removed and the mechanic is rooting around in the engine. Any thoughts on the price I should look for assuming I need to take care of the clutch and engine issues after purchase? [/FONT]

This is a low mileage car if interested I would get an independent PPI. Otherwise too much work for a 21k car.

Low mileage is only good if there are no problems. It appears to be from the oil usage that this 3.2 has been struck by the early valve guide wear syndrome. No way this is a $21K car. For $21K should should be able to get a close to perfect late 80's Carrera. The car you are looking at does have some life left before time for the top end rebuild, but the owner would have to seriously reduce the price of the car. Don't limit yourself to what you can find in the KC area. Yes it is a bit more of a hassle to travel, but if you expand your search there are lots of nice cars to be had. You will also discover, as you spend time on this board, that there are Pelicans all over the U.S. that would be willing to help check out a potential purchase and recommend a good place to get a PPI. If you do need a PPI, Imagine Auto in Lenexa is the best!
