Effect of prior rust on value
I am just about to begin the restoration and cloning of my first Porsche. The shell is a 1972 T. I own it for no money really, that is why I am saving it. It is rusty to say the least. The following are to be replaced with NOS or original panels from unrusted cars.
Inner and OUter rockers, jack tubes and supports (Left and Right sides) Tank Support Suspension pan front lip Battery Box Fender 'wings' (behind the fender, attached to the shell ahead of the doors) Bottoms of the door hinge posts (Left and Right) Door latch post (Drivers side) Small area of floow pan in rear passenger side Rear quarters (found a set of OEM RS quarters, thanks Mikey74!) Rear shelf portions Small areas of the longitudinal frame structure on each side The car has been stripped to bare metal, no wiring, no bolt left attached. It was then media blasted and heavy sandblasted in the 'problem areas' I know there is no way to truly get rid of rust forever. Properly done, you can defeat it for many years, but not forever. If the shell is stripped as mentioned above, repairs made properly by a talented person, what impact will the previous rust have on eventual sale? I have bought bumpers from MA Shaw (73RS style) the OEM RS quarters and I will be contacting Sonjay for a bonded tail rear lid. The rest of the car is OEM steel (non lightweight). Interior is going to have original Sport Seats and RS lightweight treatment. I am looking for a suitable roll cage that is styled after a correct period model. The driveline will be an RS spec clone job. I cannot see the value in hunting down a real RS driveline for a clone. The car is a project I would like to have done for Summer 2009. I plan on driving it that summer and most likely selling it the following spring. I am not looking for an idea of the cars value. I am looking more for the impact a history of rust will have, even when it is correctly repaired. Thanks all, Jim |
