71 E Targa What's a good Price, Opinions Please
Hi All,
I am looking at a Bahia red 71 E Targa and would like opinions regarding value. Orig. eng. had a rod let go ,it was replaced with a 71 T eng. w/ Zeniths , eng. had top end done 20k ago( owner says it has S pistons and E cams (don't they all)), trans. was rebuilt ,Hydro-pneumatic susp. replaced w/ S struts and calipers, wheels are 15 in. flat sixes (spare still 14x5.5). Body has no rust, v. straight, owner painted car and did a very good job except for two areas that have blistered due to poor prep. (one area is on hood and has no rust on the inside ), interior good but has cracked dash and one cloth covered Recaro and one stock seat, targa top in v.good cond but headliner needs to be glued. Will need carb adjust (rebuild?) ,shifter bushings and could do w/ pedal cluster rebuild. Other than a rough idle, car drives, shifts and stops well. Asking price is $12,000. I have been looking for an early targa and this one would fit the bill, what do you think? Thanks in advance Pascal ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Looks like a great car for the price! I would take it to a Porsche expert for a rust inspection (lots of hidden underbody areas) and a compression/leakdown test. If it passes, that price is very good. If it had the numbers matching engine it would be worth another $5,000 at least.

Only 935 E Targas were produced in '71.
It should have had the front suspension changed to torsion bars from the hydropneumatic, check to be sure. It apperars to have 14" wheels which is correct but not too desireable, also has a '74 exterior mirror. The seats also looked to have been changd out, not always a bad thing. Check paint code to see if it's original color if that matters to you. Does it come with the original motor and the MFI? If it's in solid driver condition, it will be a fun car at very fair price with a future. Last edited by 911s55; 07-13-2008 at 08:10 PM.. |

If you buy it - I have a 71E engine case for $250 that you could put on the shelf until the next rebuild.

It sounds like a good deal if the car is in good shape. I replaced the Zeniths on my 911T as they were extremely difficult to get properly adjusted. Budget in another $1500 for a new set of Webers...
