what 911 for me?
Im looking for another porsche as one doesn't seem to be enough.
Currently I own a 67 912 with 66,000 miles. It has been a good car, as I've owned it since 1971. Its an excellent car, but just doesn't have the *speed*. What is the best (most reliable) year to buy a different porsche? And keep price in mind, I plan on spending no more then 13,000. What would be the best 911 for me (im open to any suggestions) |

The 911SC sounds right up your alley in terms of performance, reliability, and price range. They were made from 1978-1983, with '83 being the first year a 911 convertible was offered.

Crabby, you will be very luck to find an SC for $13K imho with rust free body, upgraded motor, good tranny, nice paint, interior, etc. etc. How about a "mid-year 911" (74~77) with upgraded motor, or with a 3.0 or 3.2 transplant? I had a chance to buy a 75 with a 78 3.0 and 6&7 Fuch wheels for $9500 or b.o. not so long ago. Good luck with the search, and don'y buy without a pro inspection!!! (p.s. I was a former 912 owner too and found the cure.) ![]()

Might I suggest a higher-mileage 3.2 Carrera? You can find examples in the low teens in good condition, if you are willing to live with a car that has 170k+ on the odometer.
With such a car, at some point in the next, say, 50k miles, you are likely to need top end work done. But if you are not putting many miles on per year, as you don't seem to be, that expense may be many years in the future for you. Meanwhile you have a great car that you can certainly drive faster than your 912.

I know you mentioned one wasn't enough, but if you're interested in selling the 912....

I think you would be suited to test out the following SC 78-83 Carrera 84-86 (915) Carrera 87-89 (G-50) 964 89-94 and see what car have the right balance of power and creature comforts for you

+1 for the high mileage Carreras. Check out the "How much did you pay for your 911" thread. There are lots of good cars out there for $13k or less, IMHO.
I recently participated in a tour with 20 or so 911's, including everything naturally aspirated from a '75 S up to 996's. I was impressed with how well our older cars kept up!

I wouldn't mind buying a Porsche with high mileage.
(all my cars at home have high miles) It seems as though the 1983SC are reliable and are in my budget. I do like the 1987-1990 revision but I'm not sure if I could find a nice one in my budget. I would also like to keep my 912 as I see that they've gained some value over the years. |
