got a line on a 68 911S euro targa how much is it worth now and restored

Ok i got a line on a 1968 911S targa, cannot confirm number matching , but i am sure that it is a real S , the aluminium plates on the car says type 911S ,
the car was imported from europe in the 70 s
the original color is red but was repainted twice, it has virtually no rust , but 1 small bubble on the rear quarter, battery area, floor and front pan are mint one small weakness near the rear torsion tube

, I took it for a spin already , most of the interior is still very good ( leather) but will need to be redone ( beige)
dash not cracked all windows are good ,
guauge pod is the real thing, all in german and in good condition
Top is good
rear window is hard (too bad) might be a updated soft windows ( how can i tell without the COA
wheels are 15 inch fuch ( should they be 14s)

the engine has a rattling noise ( sound like the tensioner are failing) other than that everything was tight

apparently has racing pedigree or was given to a racer as a winning present for a race

has the tool kit and original owners manual in german

he has asked me for a certain amount , but is it right

what is it worth now, what will it be worth once concour quality finished

thanks for all your help

Excellent find.

Numbers matching car worth 15% to 20% more than non-matching.
A rust free numbers matching car as described would be worth $ 40,000 to $ 45,000. Earlier this year there was another solid window 68 S sold for around the same money.

A properly restored 67 sold for $90,000 recently. A few cars have traded at $115,000 +. These would be #1 type cars.

Ask for advise on the early S regisrty.

Be careful. You can spend alot of money in the restoration of a car like this. 1968 models also have very unique interior parts etc... and very difficult to obtain. Macroni is right on target for values for 67' S Targa but you can't judge the value of a 68' because many collectors are paying the big money for the 67' because it was the first for the S the Targa, the fuch alloys etc..... I have personally turned down over $100K for my 67 S Targa in the past month. I would think a 68' should, once restored bring within 15% of a 67'....but who really knows!! I might be way off. See what everyone else has to say.

Scott

P.S. I was one of the founders of the Early 911S Registry.

The door panels are one year only and are very difficult to find without speaker holes in them. The seams are heat-sealed, so there's no way to upholster them to make them look factory.

It took me over two years to find non-speaker panels for my '68. I have a pair of excellent panels with speaker holes if you are interested.

I broke down and bought it

here is what I found after paying and taking picture

serial 11850275
engine 4080941 so i am sure its number matching

the door panel have speaker hole , too bad they are mint

body color has a weird sequence compared to 914-6 the number is 97-5806-1 whats wrong with that

original windsheild, radio, all heater box are mint, goof floor , good pan, all the chrome is still mint

one more thing , the inside of the targa bar have 1 big hole on each side, the width of a hand, and inside that hole ther is nothing but some bracket hole, could it be that the car was a softie and converted to a hardy!! how can you tell

Yves, it should have 5.5x15" Fuchs on it. Paint code should be 97-6806-1, the 97 indicates a high temperature paint cure, and 68 for model years 68 & 69. Completely different code set to what was used in 1970 on 911 & 914/6. I'd like to know the engine type (901/02 ?) and build # (12xxx ?) for my research; they are found down, back and to the right of the serial #.

hi dave

Hi dave i did not know you were into early car too

I have bought the car, I gave 1/2 down on it already ,, the car is being brought home on the 6th, the guy is in vacation

I have gone thought the picture when i gave the deposit and could not find the other numbers , as soon as i have the car i'll let you know

the car does have the right fuchs, everything is right

the only thing weird is that the car seems to have a some sort of " factory look" 4 point seat belts

the original owner ( a german olympic athelete might have raced it ) and i have been trying to get a hold of him
