why me? another 77 s

So I had a couple of earlier posts concerning my coworkers pristine, 42k mi, 77 with tensioner update, popoff valve, thermals removed, 11 blade fan. I think she might sell for $15K but she's made no move to contact me.

Today I'm looking here on Pelican for cars for sale, and another coworker says, I'll sell you my Porsche. "OK tell me about it" 77 911S with 201K, Targa, same owner for 18 yrs. He's put 100K of the miles on. When he bought it he had the engine "gone thru" gaskets and such but not rebuilt. Guy is very neat and tidy, expect the car to be the same. But he's not a gear head and doesn't know about pop offs or even if it's got AC?

So I'm like Ha not interested, I"m holding out for that SC or Carrera everyone says I should buy, then I ask "so what do you think it's worth?" and he says $7K....... I know all Pcars are $20k up front or later

Why to really nice clean straight unabused 77's but no nice unabused SC's come my way.

I"m not looking for a DD, more of a DE / Autox/ PCA ralley and drives kind of car. What are your thoughts on these 2 cars, just keep my hands in my pockets. I do like the idea of the simplicity and basic in touch with the car aspect of these older cars..

The 7k Guy is on the boat with me here in Alaska. The only picture he has is one of his road racing bicycle standing behind the Porsche. That's whats taking all his time, and leaving none for the car. 524 mi relay thru the mountains of Oregon. He says he'll send some photos when he gets home next time.
So this one piques your intrest huh? Seems like it might be a good entry into the 911 world. You notice that no one has a new Porsche. Best one I know is the guy who got me thinking Pcar has a 96 C4S. He even let me autox it once..

I drove a buddies R-32, great car but seemed really nose heavy. It's been a while since I have driven a fwd.

Porsche 911s choose their owners.

Offer 5 grand and look for a nice 3.0 or 3.2 engine swap...get some local enthusiasts down for beer and pizza and do a weekend swap...sell the 2.7 as a core for a grand.

Simple... Get a PPI on the car and find out how much work (if any) it needs. If it turns out to be a solid car with good mechanicals, I'd go for it.

When it comes down to it, condition is the most important factor when buying a used car (especially a used 911). I would certainly take a solid '77 over a marginal / crappy '89 any day of the week. If you can get a solid 911 for $7K go for it!

77s

Alot of the bashers of the 2.7s again have never owned even owned a 2.7, there are some that had but the majority just spread anti 2.7 banter just because they think it's cool to do so. A 77S is a great year, galvanized body narrow light weight, front oil cooler.

If the PPI again checks out they can be excellent cars, I have a 72 Coupe, 77S Coupe and an 82 SC Coupe. They all are different, however the 77S has something that the other 2 don't have, and vise versa. Each car feels different however each are equally enjoyable!

I just finished an 890 mile trip last friday driving my sub 7k 77S "that will likely pull head studs at any moment" from New york to Wisconsin and had an absolute blast. The 2.7 with 122k on the odometer didn't skip a beat, no pulled head studs and it didn't even budge past 190F in temperature in stop and go "at 85 degrees "traffic in Chicago. Those are perfect conditions for setting off the Time Bomb wouldn't ya say?

Heat was the killer of the 2.7 , not all will self destruct, the climate where they spent their life plays a huge role in the durability of those cars. Would I purchase a 74-77 that is original and has spent it's life in california , probably not . However I wouldn't think twice if it's life has been cooler in northern climates, if I was looking for another 2.7 car. Now I just need an 80s 3.2 and a 993 and Im set! hehhe

They are out there and not all are time-bombs, the 2.7 has a great low-end torque feeling that makes driving them a pleasure. Great sounds and they still feel light and toss-able like the early cars.

With all that being said now we know of 2 2.7s that have lasted 100+K without major malfunctions.

Also how can you go wrong, the 74-77 narrow body cars have a great look and feel to them. With the chrome they have such a clean and classy look that is so different than an SC and more modern and refined than a pre-73.

They just look good.

Provenace

I'll tell you guys one of the reasons I find either of these cars interesting is because I know the owners and the history of the cars. Both have been with present owners for apprx 18 years.

I also like the idea of a simpler lighter car. They are both NW cars and haven't been run too long in the heat, or what passed for heat in Seattle. I know the 200K mile car has been driven fast but not raced.

Good news is that they aren't any more anxious to sell than I am to buy.
