930 or 964?
Porsche owners,
I am hoping to be joining your ranks fairly soon and need your help in order to make a final sound decision. I have grown up lusting for the 930's and have been shopping for a few months now. I have seen lots of interesting 930's and have compiled a list of a couple of finalists. There is an intruder in this list however, a 1991 964. For those of you who have been fortunate enough to drive both types of models, can you please provide me with the pros and cons of each platform? How about a 930 cab? I am looking at 1986-1987 930's, ~ 70k miles, ~ $34k ($40k for cab) The 1991 964 has about the same mileage and is going for ~ $38k I have narrowed down my options to cars in very good condition, no mods. Thanks in advance for your feedback! |

I assume you are talking 964 Turbo?
I say go for the 964. More modern suspension, a bit heavier too, but larger brakes, ABS and airbags too (if you are worried about that kind of safety advancement). The motors are largely similar since Porsche couldn't afford to update the Turbo motor like the regular NA motors had been with the intro of the 964 series. IIRC, a 965T, 3.3l was rated around 315hp (usa) vs the rated 288 (usa) hp of the 930. Then again, a 964 (guess technically a 965) wieghs a bunch more than the 930. I am sure the 930 is "more raw", so it might depend on how you will use the car, no? Will the styling of the 964 be to your liking? (especially if you grew up "lusting" after the 930? tough call. Sometimes I like the 964 styling.. sometimes it just looks too bulbous. You could just use the old maxim "get the newest one you can afford" as it affords the greatest development.

Yes, 964 Turbo.
Thanks for the feedback, it is helpful and correlates with what I have been hearing from other sources. |

Also remember that pre '89 930s are 4 speeds. The '89 was the first year with a G50-5speed. This was carried over into the 964T.

930, 964 & 996
If you are considering the 930 & 964 Turbos. You need to add the 996TT to your shopping list. Presently, they are the best bang for the buck car on the market in the porsche world! The only possible detraction would be they are not aircooled.
They are very stout vehicles.

Correct me if I am wrong, but for ~5K you can get G50-5 speed instaled in 930 and few more $$$ to lift power.
Considering weigh difference, you getting more HP/LBS on 930 anyway. even though 964 is my first love, I am getting 86 911 Turbo.

If you can afford it, the 1994 is the best of all in my mind. Significant HP bump from earlier cars, and still 2WD. Love the wheels, too. I'd take one over a 993 twin any day.
930 vs '91 -- if you want a driver, get the later car. 930s may retain value better for a bit, but suspect it's moot as once were off hydrocarbons, they're all junk (may be a while, but it's coming) Regardless, I say go with your passion...

Thank you all for your valuable feedback. I think I will follow my passion and stick with a 930. If the drive is harder, maybe my wife won't want to have anything to do with it!

I did it and am now officially a Porsche owner. I did end up following my passion and got a 1986 930. You can see it on eBay, item number 130248045836 or alternatively here: http://www.rsfm.com/detail.aspx?iid=3131816
Any comments or suggestions on what to do next with my new baby? Anyone else ever dealt with David Luce @ Rancho Santa Fe Motors? |

Very nice looking 930! Congrats and welcome aboard. I'm sure the turbo and 911 forum will give you a get welcome.
