Another Ebay 930; too good to be true?

So I was cruising Ebay and came across this ad:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks___Porsche-930-3-6-twinturbo-with-830hp-to-the-wheels_W0QQitemZ110286134638QQddnZCarsQ20Q26Q20Tru cksQQddiZ2282QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item110286134638& _trkparms=72%3A727%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318 &_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

Item Number: 110286134638

Looks like it was done nicely. Frankly, I'd love to see this car in person, and drive it. The ad states "This car started out as an original rust free930 turbo with only 15000 miles. About 10 years age the car was update to be a street or strip show car.It was striped down to the metal and redone. The car has a 3.6 custom built twin turbo engine that made 830 hp to the wheels ..."

I frankly can't understand why someone would convert a '79 930 that had so few miles on it (and being in show quality). To me that is a very significant year for the 930. A mint '79 930 would fetch much more than one that has been updated as this one has. Hey, to each his own. I bought mine heavily modified and I've continued to modify mine with performance enhancing modifications. But mine was already bastardized, the ad doesn't claim this for this car.

I'd love to do these mods to my car, but I think that I would have to spend about $30k at a minimum with used parts. Certaintly more than my car is worth.

So what do you guys think? Is this car for real? Why would someone convert a '79 930 into a '94 turbo S look-a-like when they could have done it with any other regular 911 or 964 of this time period?

I do think the pictures posted on there are pretty nice (although the door speakers cut-outs are in the RS door panels minus the speakers).

Wow.... those mods look gooood..... I prefer the old 930 body style though.

The wording in that listing would give me pause, it could simply be that English is not the persons first language but alot of the scam add's are written as poorly in the snytax and grammar department.

They even grafted in the 964's raised center tunnel, that is some serious work.

I will admit, the induction, exhaust, and turbo arrangement is awesome except for the lack of heat. If someone made that in kit form I might have to try and decide just how important heat is to me.

Which is why it's cheaper than some would expect, along with the MOTEC.

That car has some serious work in it, it's just the cosmetic stuff that turns people off. Hopefully someone changes it back.

That is up in Ronnie's(RoninLB) neck of the woods. Maybe he would look at it for you.

One safety item of worth mentioning. Look at how the seat belts are run. With that downward angle, the belts would compress a persons spine in a wreck!

My basic question is why would someone modify a '79 930 to begin with?

I can't imagine doing this to the car the auction claimed it was.

Since some much was changed/modified, why not do it to a Carrera or a 964 Coupe roller?

I've seen that car before. Love it. One thing puzzling is the angle on the waste gate's inlet tubing. It appears to be angled backwards of exhaust flow.

That looks like an unlimited budget build with over $50k in mods alone. If I knew I was going to do such a car and had that kind of money to spend, I would want to start w the best donor I could.

If you are truly interested in the car and that is your concern, just make sure you get the VIN and run a CARFAX on top of other reasonable due diligence.

I thought eBay always had the vin numbers in their adds. Has that changed as I did not see one here?

Bet he dose not let it go for under $50k.

A '79 won't be in the CARFAX database. It was before the automakers went to a standardized 17 character VIN.

Some people attempt to get around this common sense rule by using a seat that has been tested to be able to take the loads imposed on them by the poor belt routing. The manufacturers of the harnesses have a list of acceptable seats. I think it's a big mistake.

What's worse is that the shoulder belts appear to be attached at a point that isn't structurally sound enough and there looks to be a sub belt laying in the passenger floor, which leadds me to believe that those have been installed improperly as well.

I don't understand how people can screw this up time after time. The information is out there, and it's free.

Thanks guys. I'd love to buy the car, but I back on a ship again. No time to drive for pleasure until we move the mine sweepers to San Diego in the Spring. Once that happens I'll figure a way to get my 911 out there. Probably will be another road trip.
