Original owner no sunroof SC
Hello,
So I just got back from driving an 80 coupe. I was referred by the current (and orginal) owner's mechanic. The mechanics seem very good (yes I will get a PPI if I go forward). The paint is shot. The seats are shot. The dash is shot. The wheels are faded. You get the idea. Engine lid is dented. One small wreck on passenger fender, long repaired. 165K miles. Asking between 9 and 10. Headliner is discolored. Here is the attraction: it is original. Other than carrera tensioners, this thing is stock. I like that. Not even a tail. Also, no sunroof. This is a big selling point for me as I am long waisted. My head didn't hit. Nice colors. Black interior. Silver exterior. It drives VERY solid. However, I would not call it peppy. Certainly not spirited like some 911's I have driven. I noticed some lifter type rattle and wonder if there is a loose valve or two. The high point was the 915 shifter. Perfect! Brand new bushing job. This is the first time I have driven a 915 that wasn't a sloppy piece of crap. What I want is a daily driver. I like this as it is not all gold chains and big tails. I am in sales and don't need that type of attention. Nicely classic without too much attention. Give the car's cosmetic challenges, I think mid 9k is too much. Thoughts? Larry |

Between paint and interior, you're looking at $5-10K before addressing the engine noise. Most common in this model is the dreaded broken head stud that, left unchecked, will cause progressive damage to heads and cylinders. At that mileage, you could have very worn valve guides as well, and they can be noisy when shot. Of course, it could just be a loose rocker or two, so the PPI will be key, if you choose to undertake the restoration.
Personally, I'd wait for a done car. Non-sunroof SCs are rare, but not so rare as to warrant over-paying by thousands. Someone once said: the most expensive car you'll ever buy is a cheap Porsche. Oh, wait. That was me.

Let's say you pay $7,000, seats $300 , dash $500, headliner $300, refinished wheels $500, paint $2500 and minor misc $1000. Everything but the paint you do yourself if not add another $1000. You know have a $ 13,000 +/- car. Every number here I estimated conservatively. For $13,000 today you could buy a very nice SC. I would pass on this car as it is too worn.
Here is a $13,000 asking car. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=424917
