Values of unique cars

I posted this in the Cars for Sale section and then realized that no responses are allowed.

I have no question. I am simply stating that all is not bust in the market for nice, unique cars and don't look at final EBAY bids as being the true market value. Many people look at ebay results and think that is the value of the cars today.

I never use ebay as a prime guide to vehicle values.

Most of the folks clicking the button on cars are looking for a bargain and bid accordingly. From my perspective, I'm the same way; if there is an auction that is short enough to not allow a PPI, my bid would reflect the risk that I'm taking by purchasing without a PPI.

Well stated.

A one time listing on eBay is definitely not an indication of market - too many potential buyers will miss it. But if the car is listed several times over a long period then I believe that market will be reflected. Two cars from Canada sold within the past month or so and both had been listed several times over the past year. In one case the car brought more than the initial listings and in the other case it brought less.

Go over to 6 speed and watch 150k cars going for 95k with no buyers...not everything is going bust? I don't know, perhaps if you have a mint original 911S or R or something along those lines, you'll be ok but a cut-up, modded out car will never bring back your investment in the best of times...right now, hold on to your toys unless you want to fire-sale them.

My original post referred to you saying that you had an offer for 34.5k for a vehicle but your bottom line was 35k...to me, that's shortsighted...but that's just me. I do wish you the best of luck selling your car.

I concur with this analysis. As for the 34.5k offer, I would have taken it. Case in point would be a friend's 2007 Cayman S. She was selling it earlier this year with 3000 miles and wanted $57k. She was offered $53k and I told her to take it and she balked as she wanted at least $55k. That seller dropped out and she had no other offers. 6 months later, she ended up trading her car in and got something in the $40s for the same car.

hi Doug, I really appreciate your honesty on what is going on with trying to sell your car. i was watching it basically to see where the bidding went and was shocked it only went to 22k. the fact that you were getting offers outside the bidding makes me feel better about the value of our cars. i think $35k is very reasonable for your car and i wouldn't budge below that amount. as a side story about selling unique things - my sister and i went through selling my parent's house recently and we basically raised our asking price anticipating a low-ball bid. it worked, we got what we thought we would and the buyer felt they were getting an great deal. obviously this works because establishing value of unique items is difficult but at least there aren't to many others to compare to.

good luck!
