Talk me out of this car

I've had it in my mind lately that I need a nice daily driver. I found an 88 Carrera with 65k on it for less than $18k.

I've viewed the car and it is very nice and very stock(good). Nice repaint although the current owner doesn't believe it's been touched except for the front hood for rock chips.

Slate gray metallic exterior, linen interior. Chromed Fuchs 7's+8's(meh), strut bar. Owner has receipts for recent valve adjust, new front calipers/pads and new clutch.

Drives very nice, feels tight with no play in the steering and no unusual noises coming into the cabin either from the engine or suspension.

The only question marks I had were the sunroof doesn't work(possibly leaks) because he claims not to drive it when it rains. I don't care about the sunroof working as I don't like them anyhow but the possible leak thing is concerning.

And though the A/C parts are on the car, it does not blow cold. Could be a leak/simple fix who knows.

As I write this I can't see anything monumental that would really keep me from buying it.

My current dd is my beloved 88 BMW 325e that I bought about 4 or so years ago. It's sunroof does leak and it has no A/C as well, but I'm used to that.

Pictures for reference:

Good deal? I'm thinking maybe so................
Help me out here

Ive called the shop that did the valve adjust and spoke to them to see if they checked the head studs etc. And the car runs too good to me to have any bad cylinders. No smoke on startup or under hard accel and no sign of any mis-fire/ lack of power. So I'm pretty confident the engine is solid, If needed I could do my own compression check.

I also looked under the engine and only minor oil seepage but no real leaks. Someone had, in the past replaced the push rod tubes with collapsible ones but they looked fine with no leaks whatsoever.

i just did a leak down and a compression check on a car that runs great after pulling the valve covers found two studs per side broken. he bought the car anyways and will probably drive it for a few months then do the work.

PPI is allways a good idea.

is that white interior?

cheers ed

Ed,
I agree about the PPI, I'm a mechanic by trade(though not specifically P-cars) and am pretty confident about this car.

Actually it's kind of off white. Linen , I think it's called.

village idiot...

So what's the question man? It looks good.. it's bone stock (rare) and very clean from the pics. I like the color combo..

If you decide not to buy it.. would you please PM me the info on the car, I may be interested.

Thanks

Talk you out of it? Hmmm...can't do it. Assuming good leakdown numbers and no major body/frame damage that's a nice car for a nice price. They may even take less than that. I'll concur with the previous posters- that appears to be a nice 911 at a pretty good price.

I agree that it's a very nice car, all the gaps are nice and even, and the pan looks excellent. I'm sure the owner was more than a little surprised when I dropped on my belly to check the underside of the car or when I pulled out my mini mag light to inspect the usual areas in the fender wells where leaves etc. collect that cause rust.
Or maybe when I pulled out the little red book to check engine/chassis numbers.

Believe me, I was pretty thorough. I even pulled up the entire front trunk carpeting to check for hack jobs on the wire harness at the fuse box and to check for battery acid spills in the front pan area.
All those areas looked fine.

The headliner around the opening for the sunroof was a little ragged, but again nothing to worry about.

onboost, if I don't go forward with the purchase I'll let you know

Not in my neck of the woods. Last one I saw for sale locally was going for about $27k. Much too rich for my blood. However, ther are several 996's for sale around $22k that have me thinking

There was a 993 that went for $19k in Hawaii Kai.

Go for it, Tom. Just don't overextend yourself. FWIW, I'll be getting that Weissach from Gerard in a couple months after all the work is done. Then it'll be for sale as I don't need all these cars.

Hey Bryan, Yeah, I know all about overextending. I dug my self out of a big financial hole I made while road racing motorcycles and buying toys when I worked at Atlantic autobody. Then the owner went insane and started doing ice and not paying his employees....................
So no more credit cards for me, If I don't have the cash I don't buy..........

I've been looking for a Carrera for a little bit mostly because i wanted a G50 car. If you come across any more 993's for a good price let me know!

Any idea on what you'll want for the Weissach?

Screeeeeeech..er, uh.. Busted!!

Happy New Year to you and your lovely family Trini!

You are correct.. I do have enough projects.

Ahhh, but as we all know, this is a sickness with no real cure! However, that's the nice thing about this car.. it's not a project just get in and drive.

Looking forward to some serious Cars and Coffee events this year... think the local guys need to step it up a bit on some of the runs though. Very repetitive. I'm willing to put together a couple as I've got a few sets of directions left over from previous runs.

How bout southern MD for some seafood?

See ya soon..

Paul

Very cool.. begin to warn them then.. change is coming!

I kinda got the feeling that Bull may have gotten a little tweeked at somone. He does a great tour.. just seems to only go north in his directions.

I've got one that takes you down to the yacht club in Shady Side but it's a really boring place to eat.. need to add to that one to pull it back across to Annapolis.

Think I'm getting waaaaaaay off topic though.. to the point of hi-jaking the theread!

Shoot me a PM with an email address and we'll catch-up.

Cheers,

P-
