The following 356 was on eBay. It didn't get one bid. Why?

Was it the rusty jack point, suggesting more serious tub problems?

The $25K opening bid may have something to do with it. Have you picked up a newspaper or watched the news in the past couple months?

$25k is a lot heading into a depression, plus there is a nice 930 advertised at Pelican for that price, plus if there is rust in one immediately visible spot, there is most likely more rust in 10 other spots...

If I might offer a bit of advise on ebay... You really should start with a $1.00 initial price and set a reserve at $25,000... This way you have no risk below $25,000 and you will see what the market will bare. This is good info that you'll never see with a high initial bid. There could have been a 24,900 bidder!

Double edged sword - I tried that with a restored wood 911 steering wheel, usually good for a minimum of $650. I got $404.

As suggested, shoulda set your reserve @ $650.

You never know, with limited information, what condition a 50 year old car is really in, based on an ad.

Price does seem low, though. Sports car prices have taken a dump lately, you can get a late 80s or early 90s low mileage Testarossa these days for $35,000.

I'm by no means an expert but there is a lot wrong about this car that would make most folks squeamish unless they could crawl underneath and poke with an ice pick.

- The longitudinals look to be toast. Covered up with some POR-15
- The dash has gauges and emblems where it shouldn't
- Engine is weird for a S90, wrong color fan housing and missing air cleaners, in fact it appears to be a Normal engine (60 hp)
- Bubbles in rockers are visible in several photos
- Bumpers are missing overriders/guards

356 guys are a particular lot. Most want original, while only a few of us go outlaw. This car is neither. It may have been a $25k car 18 months ago but now it's more like $15k at best.

I like some bare bottoms, tho...

Seriously, "collector cars" are taking a hit. Only top quality is selling well, and that if the seller is sensible...

UP FOR AUCTION IS A 1959 PORSCHE 356, THE ODOMETER READS 24,818 NOT SURE IF IT IS CORRECT, ACTUAL MILEAGE UNKNOWN, BUT THE ODOMETER DOES WORK. WE HAVE COMPLETELY REBUILT THE SUPER 90 1600 CC ENGINE AND REPLACED THE CLUTCH AT THE SAME TIME. THE BRAKE LINES AND HARDWARE ARE ALL NEW, THE CAR STOPS ON A DIME. THE BODY IS IN GOOD SHAPE , VERY LITTLE RUST ONLY TWO SPOTS, WHICH IS VERY GOOD FOR A CAR THAT IS KNOWN FOR RUST, THIS CAR HAS SAT IN STORAGE FOR SEVERAL YEARS BEFOR WE GOT IT AND REBUILT THE ENGINE, THE PAINT IS GLOSSY, WITH ONE SMALL DING IN THE LEFT REAR QUARTER PANEL(TRIED TO PUT A PIC OF IT BUT THE DING IS SO SMALL IT DIDNT SHOW UP IN THE PIC) . THE GLASS IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION MINUS A FEW MINOR SCRATCHES ON THE REAR WINDOW, I'M SURE THEY CAN BE POLISHED OUT,THERE ARE TWO SMALL RUST SPOTS UNDERNEATH, ONE IN THE PASSENGER SIDE JACK POINT AND THE OTHER IS ON THE FRONT SUSPENSION SUPPORT, BOTH RUST SPOTS ARE PICTURED. THERE IS ALSO SLIGHT BUBBLING UNDER THE PAINT IN ONE SMALL SPOT ON THE LEFT FRONT FENDER(ALSO PICTURED). THE WINDOW SEAL AROUND THE REAR WINDOW IS CRACKED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, IT DOES NOT LEAK IT JUST LOOKS BAD. THE CHROME HAS A VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF PITTING ON IT. THE ENGINE IS THE CORRECT ENGINE FOR THE CAR, BUT ITS NOT THE ORIGINAL. THE FLOOR PANS AND THE CAR ITSELF ARE SOLID, THE CAR RUNS AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS, THIS CAR IS A UN-RESTORED BEAUTY, WITH VERY LITTLE WORK THIS COULD BE A SHOW CAR.

It has a transplanted 3.0, so it's no more a '75 than a '73 (or a '79).

My thoughts exactly. I saw those underside pics with that fresh coat of black spray paint (or whatever it is)and thought "man that thing might have some secrets"

+1 to virtually all of the observations here...this is a tough market, where the seller has to be uber informative, have a top notch item, and still has to be a bit lucky to get the right buyer.

Great time to be a buyer for just about anything. These are the days when millionaires are made.

Interesting auction. I'm sitting on a $22,500 offer on my '64C coupe. It's a number matching restored non sunroof needs interior and mechanical resto.

The reason I got interested was that the recent Excellence article on a '63 356 coupe reminded me of our '63 Beetle, squished a bit. Paying more attention to the beautiful lines of those models even has my wife interested!

So begins my education on the 356s and how I can put another car into the garage.
