Need advice for selling Porsche

I have made the decision to sell my 1983 cabriolet. After doing some searching on google I quickly realized that I have no idea where the best place is on the internet to advertise it.

I believe I am looking for a special buyer since my car is in xlnt condition, it has only 44,000 original miles, and I will be looking to sell it at the higher end of its fmv. I don't have to sell it, but I want to upgrade to a newer model that I can drive everyday.

I have always received great advice in this forum so I decided to start here.

Thanks in advance for your help

Rob

I would suggest that you advertise it here, with lots of details & pictures. Hard to say what it is worth. Probably worth more to you than to most potential Porsche buyers, though. It is not a great time to sell, either.

Good luck.

depends on where you live,
you are obviously looking for someone who will appreciate low milage mint condition car, and will not mind paying a little higher than the average one...
so what better place to start then your local porsche club centre, they always have/know people who are willing to buy such cars.
Just a thought
good luck

As sancho suggested if possible local is always best and easiest for both parties envolved.
Post your location.

I agree with silverc4s...not the best time to sell if you're looking for top dollar...

Why isn't an 83 cab in xlnt condition with only 44k on the clock a daily driver? You may want to drive it (every day) until the market improves...

If you choose to sell...I'd put it here on PP and on your local craigslist...

I agree with Bill and CAPierce...The economic times will certainly have a direct bearing on what your car will sell for. If you have to sell now, consider listing on Ebay, if for nothing else, the widest advertising venue possible. It may cost a few bucks, but it will allow you to also set a reserve price that must be met or it will not sell.
Hope this helps

15 years ago I lived in los angeles and drove the car on weekends through the canyons and of course up and down the coast. Then I moved to Las Vegas where we don't have the most scenic views etc; so I don't drive the car as much as I used to.

Yesterday I attended our local porsche club meeting and that is what motivated to trade up to a more drivable car for this area.

I will post the car for sale in this forum, what about EBAY motors as well?

Thanks

Rob

Rob,
You have got a great car w/ a few major pluses that create greater value; mileage / condition and the 1 yr SC factor. List this car on the PCA site. This will give you the highest value. Be patient the market is slower but you are listing at the appropriate time for a convertible. Ebay will expose the car but this model needs the knowledgable consumer willing to put up a little more $$s.

Interesting topic. We too have an 83' Cab, RoW model, 44k miles. My father and I have thrown around the idea of selling it to possibly purchase a LWB car. Problem is... we just wouldn't even begin to know were to start pricing considering the current market...

In addition to what others have suggested I would list in Panorama and Excellence magazines. They are magazines obviously but they do post on web sites also and you get a wide exposure to the enthusiast market. You can also review past issues for price comparisons.

Thank you all for your advice. It is very helpful and will allow me to focus in on seeing if I can sell it at this time for a good price.

My suggestions:

Put together a very good, detailed ad that fully describes the car. I don't think you can put too much detail into the ad (as long as it's relevant and true ;-)).

Take a LOT of detailed pictures. If you have access to a friend or even a pro or semi-pro photographer consider using one.

Don't be afraid to ask for good money for a top-condition car. Especially if you don't HAVE to sell. There are always buyers for super low-mileage cars, although you might have to be patient in this economy.

Here are the places where I would advertise:

Local Craigslist and possibly other Craigslists within a reasonable distance of your location. Include links to your pictures either in the Craigslist ad(s), or to a website where the pictures are located. Note: Craigslist ads expire on a weekly basis, so you have to keep renewing them, which is kind of a pain, but I think it's worth it.

Online sites including: Pelican Porsches for Sale, Rennlist Classified (you have to be a member, but it's inexpensive), the PCA site (both online and in Panorama--you have to be a PCA member), PML (Porsche Market Letter) as recommended by Techweenie.

Additionally I recommend buying a non-expiring Auto-trader ad. Some Autotrader areas don't allow much of a description and their picture hosting is kind of crappy, so be sure to include a link to all the great pix you have taken.

There is one other site that I have used very successfully in the past for two ultra-low-mileage cars that I had. I think they are still in business: www.carshowing.com. I don't know what their current charges or procedures are, but these two cars both sold almost immediately after I posted them there. No doubt a result of my brilliant copywriting -- Here are the links to those two cars as an example of how I would do it. This site has a lot of "regular" cars, but I discovered it when I ran across a really nice 914-6 (conversion) that was advertised there. So they do somehow reach the enthusiast market--or at least they used to.

951 with 21K miles:

944S2 with 30K miles:

http://www.carshowing.com/detail-sold.php?fatherID=36&ListingID=12&TypeID=42

Hope this helps and good luck with the sale.

I'm admittedly biased because I own a domestic '83 SC cab, but are you really committed to selling it? There are a lot of positives to this model (first Porsche cabriolet since '65, for one). Is yours an unusual color, as in not red, black or white?

These cars were hard to get new, and there were only 2,000 or so U.S. models made that first year. This dog is going to have its day at some point.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Brian

My thought exactly...an '83 Cab is a nice car, but I doubt it will become a highly sought after classic. With 44K on the clock, it should be a fine daily driver....

100-point ad on eBay

This is just about perfect ad IMHO:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260400675755&fromMakeT rack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:middle:us

And a really NICE 944, very well presented with no reserve. (I think he'll get $8-10K for it.)
