Market-Value enquiry: '87 Carrera Targa, 80k miles
Hi,
Can anyone help me determine the fair market value for an '87 Carrera Targa? I do not have Excellence from last August (issue #166) which is the last time they did the Market Update on this model. If you have that information I'd greatly appreciate it if you would be so kind as to pass it along. Other than that, here is a little more about the car in the hope that you can share your expertise on its value: It is a very solid, original and unmolested example which has about 80,000 miles on the clock. Color is Guards Red with a Linen (off-white) leather interior. The car has only had two owners and comes with full service records since new. It was originally from Texas and had almost all the work done at Louden Motorcar Services in Dallas. In general, I would say is in "good" to "very good" condition but specifically: The interior is showing its age a little, largely due to the fact that it is such a light color which shows the dirt, mostly on the carpeting and just a bit on the seats. The dashboard is perfect. The exterior is very, very good considering that it is the original paint. It does have some minor stone chips and scuffs here and there but there is virtually no evidence of oxidation and the paint still looks great. The Targa top has some minor cracking at the fold-lines so should be recovered. Mechanically, there is some typical weeping around the oil-return lines and the valve cover gaskets need replacing. The tires are "oversized" and should be replaced with the correct size. Some electrical gremlins have caused the electric mirrors and the passenger's side power window switch and power-seat to stop functioning. The heater-blower is not working. A mechanical inspection at a Bosch Authorized service centre determined that these and some other issues could require about $4,000 of work to make everything "perfect." I sold my 87 Targa last year at this time for $16K. It had similar mileage, but did not have the issues your car has, for example, it had a newly recovered targa top, new correct size tires and no interior issues. John
