356 Case and a Lottery Ticket

I've acquired a 356 Normal matching number 3 piece case that is the matching number for the most beautiful 356 I have ever seen. A picture of such car at Pebble Beach is attached. I have been in contact (via email) with the car's owner but he does not seem to be interested in re-uniting the engine with the car and I have offered it to him at a very fair price. So here it is Engine #P74282 original to Car # 107686, a very clean 3 piece set (all are stamped 554) for $1,000 which includes shipping within CONUS. Some day some one will pay a Kings Ransom for this case.

I wonder what engine/ engine number is in the car currently?

I could probably ask the owner for the current engine number, or it might be in the vin database kept by the 356 Registry. He told me he was now running a 1600 Super. I had a rebuildable long block with a thrown rod that I offered to him with this case for $3k which I thought was very reasonble. Some people just see the value of matching numbers. On resell a matching number vehicle restored to this condition could easily fetch an addittional $10 to $15K imho. I've since parted out about half of the thrown rod case components and recouped a tad shy of $2K to date. Still have the crank and heads and the front cover as well as some odds and ends. It was very clean and looks like the rod broke very shortly after it was put together. The gold andonized pushrod tubes looked brand new. I also sent the original owner a copy of this post to see if he had any further interest. I have not heard back from him. I figure from his emails that he's about ten years plus older than me which would put him in his mid to late 70's. Perspectives and potentials and priorities change in life. The Rudge wheels are on the COA.
