RANT: bumping in the classified forum

OK, so I have too much time on my hands this Thursday afternoon.

I've been a fairly regular poster on PP for sometime, mostly in OT and classifieds.

Lately, and probably because of the times we're in, the number of classified ads has increased. People want to sell things and get cash in return. I'm right there with them....

Here's what really bugs me though. There are some that bump their ads as soon as it hits page 2, sometimes well within 5 hours. Many are only marginally better waiting a day.

Another bump trick is to post in the ad responding to someone that stated they sent a PM i.e. "Ah hey, I'm just letting you know that I sent you a PM replying to your PM about the parts I have listed......"

Don't get me started on multiple posts for the same items...

These forums are for EVERYONE's use, not for the few. Follow the rules folks and everybody gets a fair kick at the can. There, now I feel better.

Oh and include your location in your profile......

Although you are correct, you know what bugs me? When someone posts a rant about classifieds in the technical section! Just having some fun with ya.

I am with you, heck I dont even have a car for sale but there are some people who bump their car just about every single day or two days and their car has been on the sight for weeks. Guess what its rude to those people who are tyring to sell their car and their car is priced where it might actually sell. After a few weeks of bumping your car to the top endlessly you might get the idea that its not going to sell in this forum at whatever price you're seeking, give someone else a shot.

I know its not that big a deal but its my own pet peeve.

I'm sorry but I just don't get it. When I hit the classifieds, I go four of five pages deep. I look at the title of every single ad for sale. If it's something I've seen before I just go right past it unless it's something I'm watching and hoping for a price adjustment. To me I don't care if it's the 3rd item of page 1 or the 20th item on page 3.

And I don't think I'm alone because I get PM's from people or notifications of activity on FS threads I've posted that I haven't bumped in weeks. When people are looking for something in particular, they actually look for it. When they are just browsing to see what's out there maybe they don't go past page 2. But I also don't think it's going to make a used stock ratio gear that's been on the market for a few weeks sell any faster if the seller bumps it daily or if they bump it weekly. That gear will sell when someone goes looking for it. Only the really good desireable stuff moves quickly. All of the other random leftover "junk" that people are looking to liquidate just kind of floats out there until someone needs something in particular and looks for it.

Sure, there are rules and people break them. You're only supposed to have 3 ads. You're only supposed to bump every once in a while. You aren't supposed to make commercial listings. All of these rules are violated with great regularity. Personally, only than the most blatant and rude disregard for the rules ever gets my attention, and even then it doesn't get me up in arms. I've got better things to do with my time than worry about someone else's ethical decision to break Wayne's rules.

If people want "equal" visibility for their product, they should use Ebay. That's my more than 2 cents on the matter.

Okay, my pet peeve is the yoyo who responds to an ad thread whose last post is 3-5 years ago. He immediately gets jumped on by a regular, then almost immediately, yoyo #2 pops in with "If yoyo #1 passes, I'll buy."

Quite a few of these old ads are by people who haven't visited Pelican for years...

Not even a week into Wayne Garage innovation and it's already full of For Sale... Not this one.

P.P. could introduce a Bump Cop Systems but then again it would probably be against your Constitution... I'm sure that it cross the Founding Fathers went they put the quilt down on the paper back on the September 17, 1787.
