6 speed
Is it possible to fit a newer 6 speed to a 3.3 turbo. If so what would all be involved.

Why bother? A correctly-built 3.3 turbo is a torque monster and doesn't need 6 speeds. Time spent shifting is time out of the throttle. If you've built a un-streetable 930 with an insane amount of boost capability, little or no off-boost power and a very tight power band, it's likely in a lightweight tube framed car anyway (and should likely be making upwards of 800-900HP). The long bell housing G50 is longer by about 1.5-2" and requires moving the motor back, which increases the weight bias to the rear - not ideal. Most people shorten the bell housing and the shafts instead. Torsion bar tubes probably still need to be reinforced/modified to clear the longer end cap. This is expensive to have done by a shop. The 6 speed is longer still - that extra gear lives in the end housing - and not by a small amount. I think it's even a long bell housing, just to make it more interesting. That's a lot to move the motor back (there's not that sort of room before the rear cross member). The only other option is to recess the end cap into the body, and retain something resembling the stock mounts. |
The simple answer is yes you could do it with enough money or skill, but no its not a straight swap.

What year 3.3 ? If its 89,91 it could be as easy as bolt right up..
I'm installing a G50/52 (Euro 6sp/LSD) in my '91 and it's straight forward. If your considering an earlier swap you have the standard space constraints and hydraulic lines and associated components to overcome.. |
