price help... 83SC
hey guys, I am trying to sell my old man's 83SC. Seems to be kinda slow out there, or maybe I am doing something wrong? I know the price is showing high, but as always, price is negotiable. Your thoughts and any insight would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Andrew:
Hate to break it to you but I think your Dad is asking far too much considering the current market, No AC, seats that need attention and the lack of paper trail. I've been keeping an eye on the SoCal SC market for some time as I'm about to put my own SC up for sale and I'll be asking $11K for Euro no-sunroof manual windows coupe with a long paper-trail and headstuds already replaced. A nice G50 Carrera might fetch $22K but a regular SC is a low teens at best. Others might disagree and I hope you get what you are looking for but be prepared to wait it out. Kevin

Low mileage good. Everything else not so good. $15k tops.

another thought
this car is very nicely presented and kudos to you for taking detailed pics of the all the potential problem areas. If you want to get top $$ for a 911 (and this is not the market in which to do that) then you need to add a few things like the results of a PPI which you pay up front for, so you list compression check values, overall inspection results, and likely work needed in your ad.
I think that car can sell for 15K, maybe a bit more, but certainly list it at $18,5 and see what you get. A Cab always commands a price premium over a coupe, this car is exceptionally nice, so I'd list it at 18.5 and see what you get. But some upfront info on mechanical condition would help get a prospective buyer to consider it. I think the other issue - and this is true with all Porsches now - is that you really have to WANT this particular model. Anybody with a down payment can get into a Boxter or a 993/996 and hope they have some fun before they go bankrupt paying "the mechanic" to fix it. good luck Mark Petry Bainbridge Island, WA 81 SC |

Good pointers Mark. I will get a PPI done this next week and will talk to my pops about dropping the price.

I am going to give a little different opinion. This car is kind of unique in that it is 1) first year of the cab, 2) a ROW, and 3) LOW miles.
Given that, for the RIGHT buyer, this really could be a 20K car. You do have some things working against you here. First and worst is the economy and the time of year. If you want to get the last 5K out of this, I would spend the next 5 months waiting (off the market) and address some issues. I think with a PPI, clean up the seats, and proper market timing (Spring with a stronger economy), this car do well. You don't say that your Dad is in a bind, just that he lost interest. Perfect. Wait for the right buyer. This car is someone's DREAM. You just need to let them find you. Good luck. Larry |

Repaint, no documentation on the speedo swap so the true mileage is really unknown, lack of other documentation, seat with a lot more wear than 46K miles would suggest - that is at best a $15-16K car.
That's not to say it's not a nice car, but that's just the market, and the way the market will be for a while. $17-$18K buys a pretty nice G50 cab. Last edited by McLovin; 10-11-2009 at 12:33 PM.. |

I think the car shows well. The seats? cmon, 27 years old, in a cab, are bound to show some wear. I must be missing what others are seeing there. That said, having owned an ROW coupe, I would be anal about proper paperwork. Once past that though, its just another 25+ year old 911. Lots of competition out there at that price point. Boxsters for one.. 3.2 / G50 911s etc. To me, the price is the main reason the car isn't moving.
For what its worth, it took me almost a full year to get the price I wanted on my beautiful 914 2.0. Unless you or your dad needs the cash, be prepared to wait for your price.
