First 911
 

Hi everybody,

I've been drooling over 911's for more than twenty years now, and I'm finally in a position that will enable me to purchase one. The model year I'm most interested in (believe it or not) is the 79 Porsche 911.

I love the lines and the simplicity of the older 911’s. They directly connect your body to the road, unlike a lot of the newer cars today that leave you with that “detached” feeling because of all the systems do the thinking and driving for you.

I love the old Datsun 280Z's for the same reason. I've done a lot of research on the various engines, transmissions, and all the idiosyncrasies about these older Porsche’s, and nothing I’ve read, seen or heard about them has deterred me. I'm also very capable mechanically, so I’m not afraid of getting my hands dirty. I do most of my own work, and I’ve restored cars and motorcycles in the past.

I currently own a 1989 BMW 635CSI that I absolutely love, and I've owned Volkswagen beetles also so I’m no stranger to German engineering.

I joined this forum because I'll need guidance and good advice. I’m a member of some other forums and I find all of them to be very helpful.

Having said that:
what things should I be aware of with a 79, is there a better model that was built in the previous or post years, are there any particular weak or trouble spots that might not be obvious upon initial inspection that I should be aware of?

From everything I’ve read, a decent 79 should range anywhere from $10.000 to $20.000 depending upon what mods were done, how original it is, mileage, and overall condition.

Any information or tips would greatly be appreciated. I'll be ready to start seriously looking at some in the spring because of other financial commitments at this time.

Sounds like the right track to me. I have an 80 sc. You will find very small and insignificant differences between the SC's, but there are differences. Nothing wrong with carreras either. Or 964's in my opinion.

Go get one. I sold my 325 is daily driver when I got the SC. They are reliable and somewhat comefortable. Certainly a good time.

'78 or '79 SCs are great cars, especially if you're looking (as you appear to be) for a very good example as opposed to 'bottom fishing.'

It took me a year to find my 635CSI, and I'm glad I took the time because it made the difference between getting a nightmare or a cherry.
