'01 911 turbo value?
I'm looking at a '01 911 turbo for sale at a local used car dealer, and wanted some opinions of it's value. It is bright yellow (not sure of exact color code), black leather interior, 6spd. manual, 41k miles. They are asking $38k for it.
I plan to use the car as a mostly daily driver; this means ferrying the kids to school and commuting to work. I also plan to do some track days and auto-crossing with it. I figure I'll have it for at least 6-7 years, which will put it around 100k miles. I'm specifically looking at a turbo because I want the lower maintenance of the "newer" watercooled cars, but not have the concerns of the 996 engines (I hear the turbo engines are pretty bulletproof). I'm a bit conflicted about this particular car. I like the color (was originally thinking dark grey/silver, but this color looks "WOW"), but realize it's going to hard to sell down the road, so wanted to factor that in. The options also seem a bit strange; it feels like a stripper model. Manual seats, no crests, etc. Most of these cars seem to be loaded, so I'd be interested in finding a list of all options available back then, as well as how to find/read the options codes. I'm also puzzled with the condition of the car. At first glance, the car looks really good. There are a minimal rock chips, and the body lines/gaps look straight. There doesn't appear to be any paintwork; I don't see any overspray on weatherstripping, etc. so things look good. However, all the wheels rashed on the spokes, but not the lips (how do you manage to do that?), and the center console is really scratched up (I'm guessing due to the driver wearing rings/heavy jewelry). There are niggling things like a missing cap on the rear wiper arm, shrunk/loose dash leather, and missing cover from the rain channel on the roof that say this wasn't the most loved car. Mechanically, the car felt good. The ride seemed a bit harsher/less refined than I expected, and roll-on power seemed soft, but maybe my expectations were too high (my reference is an 08 mazdaspeed3, and I was expecting a couple of notches above this). Everything seemed sorted except a pull to the right, and a clutch that felt "gritty" along the last half of travel. Also, the clutch was really stiff, even compared to a Jeep or Viper). The other odd thing was the dealer himself. He was very friendly/straightforward, and was open with the car. He had no qualms with me driving the car, looking it over, etc. However, when I asked for service records, he said they were not available to car dealers due to privacy laws (hmm, maybe, but ???? I've given them when I traded in my cars, and I don't know that they get shredded). I also asked for a PPI at the local dealer (~12 miles away) and he refused, stating the dealership would have a vested interest in nitpicking the car, and try to sell me one of theirs inside. Instead, he offered to have an independent shop down the block inspect the car. Now, the shop seems to reputable (I'ver never dealt with them, but have heard of them), but I'm concerned if there is a "cozy" relationship between them, and a vested interest going the other way. So what do you guys think? |
The 'no records b/c of privacy' is bs and his desire to direct the ppi to his guy is a red flag. The car sounds ok and is priced competitively, but a real pcar pro (with 996 knowledge) needs to look at it so you can go in eyes wide open. Frankly, if the Porsche service dept nitpicks the car, so be it, but I doubt they'll invent issues. If it checks out ok, it's seems like a nice buy.
Do you know how he got the car? Previous owner(s)? Also, with the vin you can usually get Porsche dealer service history. Where do you live? Any other reputable pcar / 996 independent shops nearby? Might be a good idea to at least drive a couple more cars if you can. |
The centers of the rims typically get scraped up because they stick out more than the lips. Most likely the PO tried to park close to curbs and realized that a little too late. Missing cover on the rain channel is typical as they often break a the hinge. The shrunken leather on the dash is another typical problem.
As for the PPI, try and find another competent indy that the seller does not deal with. |
