Too much for an 84?
I'm looking at an 84 Targa, 3 owner with 65k miles, asking $20.9k. Seems a bit steep. Have not seen in person, but looks good in photos and a binder full of all records. The dealer indicates the car has fabric seats that were "exclusive" in 84. Have not seen fabrics seats in one of these. Cost saving option?
Anyway, pricing is so crazy confusing on 911's it's hard to tag good/bad deal. For instance, I just missed out (by hours) on a 1 owner 88 Targa with 48k original miles that sold for $16.5k. So now I see this beautiful 84 with more miles at a significantly higher price. wtf? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Dealer's always price high so they have room to negotiate.....
Targas are less expensive than coupes and tend to have the lowest resale values of most model years. I suggest you wait or offer what you are willing to pay. It is not what is asked; it is what you are willing to pay. I do agree with you this car is priced at the top of the market.

The silver color is very good, the Targa top is not as good as a coupe, the mileage is good, the price is slightly high. The black reflective floor is nice.
It will likely sell quickly, but not at full asking price. |

Thats a nice looking car, I happen to like Targa's so to me its interesting. The seats are nothing that special but again I likem a lot especially becasue they wont wear like leather and look nice and straight a lot longer than leather. On the other hand I would not pay the offer on that car. I know he's a dealer and he can probably wait for the total retail buyer to take out his offer but I would be a few k Lower on the bid.

I like '84's, cross over year. So you get a little SC with the 3.2. Let's put aside price for now. Is it a good car?, that is question you need to review and prove. I can't tell how many times I have purchased a car with the price as my guide, I was wrong.
If the car needs nothing you are $'s ahead of the game. Look big picture. Love the seats Last edited by Cal44; 01-29-2010 at 06:36 AM.. |

Cal44, I agree with your opinion.
I'm too late on this one, SOLD. Every car I begin to seriously look at sells before I get through the basics. Fast market out there. No sweat, I'll find mine. |

Murph, you see a car you like, and you ask them to hold it. Maybe you put a deposit on it, and you get a PPI, go visit it, and buy it or not.
Act like a serious buyer, and you will get taken seriously. |

I understand, but when a car is across the country I'm not just gonna jump on a plane before I get through the basic Q&A. I need to get an idea as to the cosmetic and mechanical condition before proceeding. Also it does take some time to locate a shop that can do a good PPI.
I only inquire about cars that I'm seriously interested in. Serious buyers do their due diligence before blindly putting out money for deposits or PPI. If that means I lose out on a few cars then so be it. I want to be fairly sure I'm gonna buy the car before paying $500-$600 for a PPI. |

I agree with your philosophy Murph, I have lost a couple of cars while doing my homework. Were they good cars?......I'll never know. But the one's I did buy, and had my due diligence done, paid off dearly. My brother just bought an "88 Targa, one owner, full service docs, 46K......absolutely stunning, Marine Blue with Linen interior.....asking price was $27K. Let's just say it went for a little less than that but was a good 20+ car in my mind. No issues to sort, major service up to date.

Whatever you do, don't get an itchy trigger finger and just buy something. And get a PPI no matter what.
