1984 Targa Value question

Hi everyone,

I have started my search for another 911 (I've owned a 993 and 996 previously) and wanted to get some feedback on a 1984 Targa I looked at over the weekend.

Here's the scoop on the car. It's black on black, 140k miles, exterior is in pretty good shape (7/10) and the interior is about the same. The passenger seat needs some work as the stitching has come apart on the seat cushion. There is very little service history but I was able to talk to the shop owner who looked after it from 2003-2009 and I can get all of those records. The major thing that was done to the car was a transmission rebuild in 2003. These things were also serviced: valves were adjusted, clutch adjusted, wheel bearings, shift linkage, ignition lock assembly replaced. Then there are the standard regular oil changes that they have documentation on.

A shop took a look at the car when the current owner bought it and said that based on the compression and leakdown tests and they figure the top end had been redone at some point, but there isn't any documentation to show when it was done or who did it. The odometer was replaced at 120k miles as it stopped working. The unit that was put in showed 90k, so there is a 31k difference between the 2 odometers (the car's odometer currently shows 109k and should be 140k). It has been lowered to ROW height. I drove the car and it was pretty tight and responded well. Gearbox seems to be in decent shape based on the limited amount of time I had it out.

So the question is, how big of a deal is the odometer replacement? It's documented on a piece of paper the owner showed me. Does it kill the value of the car?

What do you guys think the car is worth based on this info and is it worth pursuing? It's listed at $14k right now.

If the odometer issue isn't a deal killer, I may proceed as I really like the car.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Lot's of 84-86 3.2's in that price range, but if you like it and it passes a PPI the price is not outrageous.
