How many prior owners is too many?

Hello all;

Was looking at an 01 Boxster S with 43K miles on it. It is in very good shape and the current owner is a very nice guy, who has taken care of the car.

We agreed on a price which I thought was fair and I decided to take the plunge, and was arranging a PPI.

I ran the Carfax and got a shock. There have been 7 owners!

The first 5 averaged a few months only a piece - 1 year by the first guy, then 1 month, 3 months 4 months, etc. The last 7 years, two owners and all the records. I called the dealer and he only had records for the first year - oil change and smog check.

I like the car, but am concerned as there are no records from before the last two owners. Concerned about a lemon, abused car and the prospect of selling an 8 owner car in a few years. That being said, it seems that the last two owners have taken good care of it.

What would you do?

Seems unusual, unless they were dealers/wholesalers who had to register them for some reason? Of a change in leaseholders/finance companies? Don't know.

If you like the car and it checks out, then I wouldn't worry about the numbers.

I bought my 911 at an auction- I have no idea about its history. Couldn't be happier with it.

If the PPI checks out and you love the car, just drive it and be happy

Having all the records for the last 7 years is more than alot of people get with their cars. Somebody once said that thinking about prior owners of your car is like thinking about how your wife lost her virginity -- just don't go there

Enjoy the ride!

Which did not affect the '01 so much. They are all subject to certain problems just as the 996 is.

Carfax also show the dealers as "owners" so that may be the short term owners as it changed dealer hands. Technically, it could be just a 3 owner car.
