My be losing my storage, might sell my 76' targa
I might be losing my storage for my 76' 911S targa. Car has only 45k miles on it, and the car is all original, paint, top, interior, radio and zero rust and in excellent overall condition! Here is what has been upgraded on the car. Exhaust backdated to 74', car never had the thermal reactors, and I have the original exhaust. New turbo style lower valve covers. 11 bladed fan. Had a bearing noise in the trans, and the rubber clutch disc was changed when the bearing was swapped out. Has chain tension guards on. Overall a real 9 1/2 out of 10! but I don't drive it much at all, so I am thinking of selling it. So what would it be worth? Remember a car is only all original once! Also I have the tools and all paperwork showing all work done to the car since new. I am the second owner of the car.

I don't know what it's worth but that's a cool interior.

That is a nice car. It must be a pretty early 76. What is the ser no? I think that if that were my car I would ask about $15-17k, Its orig, its a nice color combo. The bad news is that it still has a mag case. With the low mileage the valve guides haven't gone bad enough yet to make noise. This usually starts at 50-60k miles. That is the indicator for rebuild time, because no one in their right mind will do a head job on a mag case without doing some kind of case insert for the head studs, and yes the motor has to come apart for the installation of those. $

Maybe there is more to the story (and the cool Unimog in the background).. but why not simply look for another storage solution?
maybe another solution IS to drive it more. Take the time/make the time to drive it. Maybe 1/week? 1/month? I can't believe there isn't someplace you go that taking the 911 wouldn't be more fun.

Wow, that's a beauty...
A wonderful example of a "bad" year 911 2.7 mag case. It's so nice (dig that original red/plaid interior!), that I would guess $17k to $20k. If it was a long hood "S" in that condition - holy cow, $150k???
If I had the coin, I'd give you $5-6k for the interior alone (and I only paid $10k for my decent SC). I actually had a '76 914 from '81 until '86 (when it was actually just a used car) that was Alaska blue with a blue/black/white plaid insert similar to that - and it was trashed and had to be recovered. It's extremely rare to have the original plaid inserts. If I drove it much at all I'd remove those seats (replacement manual post '74-'83 driver quality seats are cheap) and try to preserve the inserts. The interior is still bright red, amazing! That car is would be a quandary for me. The year is undesirable & being a targa does not help, but the condition is fantastic. The exterior is nothing special, but the interior is great & the color combo is very nice (white/red). The mag case 2.7 is often regarded as the worst 911 (excluding M96's or course!) engine ever made - and this is an original engine!! It's almost too nice to drive at this point, I feel the value is in the condition. If you're on the street and take a hit, you'll probably lose 20-30% of the value for a minor crash bang. If the engine blows, and you cannot salvage the case, you lose 10% + the cost of a rebuild. If you don't care to drive much, but like the car hobby, I'd show it. If I wanted a car I could actually drive, I'd sell this beauty and look for a well maintained SC or Carrera (nice ones can be had for around $14-$15k) and pocket the change. Tough call, good luck, that's a neat car! |

Thanks guys, I wish I had more time to drive it. But being in the perfect condition that it is in, I am kind of afraid to park it anywhere! It would just be such a shame to have anything happen to it. I picked it up in 99' with only 38k on it from the original owner. He was a customer of mine, when I had my Porsche restoration/repair shop, and I told him I would buy it when he was ready to sell. It is the cleanest, unmolested 911 I have ever seen. I just like the interior so much I had to have it! I gave it to my dad to drive, but now its too hard for him to get in and out off, plus my parents might be selling their house soon, so there will go my free storage. I have to find space for my Healey and Packard as well, so something will have to go. If I do sell, I think the least I would take is $20k for it. Chances on finding another one in this condition would be next to impossible! Here are few more photos of it.

My first 911 was a 76, white targa with lobster interior. However, my was nowhere near as nice as this one. Actually it was a POS! This is one beautiful car. I hope you find a good buyer.

The interior does photograph nicely... but NEVER become beholden to your possessions. Bottom line it is a car and is built to be driven and enjoyed. I won't speak to market strength right now, but if the Healey or the Packard are not nearly as nice, I know what I'd keep and what I'd get rid of.
