RE: 1999 Boxster-Opinion to Purchase

Found this 1999 Boxster for sale in the Detroit area.

On the CarFax found it had its motor replaced less than a month ago. Called the selling dealer in Chicago and confirmed

What is your opinion.....??????

May need to copy/paste link.

Looks nice, low miles and dealer has a good rep but I would make the deal contingent on a pre purchase inspection by a Porsche mechanic you trust. I'd also find out who replaced the motor and if it was a new OEM or a rebuilt and what was done to rebuild it. If it's a new OEM it will have a 2 year warranty from Porsche if done by a dealership or authorized Porsche mechanic. If it is rebuilt I would definitely buy an extended warranty that covers everything as many rebuilds are coming out of wrecking yards and you don't know what was done and by who.

I didn't know that many were being rebuilt yet. The parts for M96 motors are starting to flow, but not that many are into it yet?

Here's an example of what I'm referring to when I say "rebuilt."
The Reality: Buying a "used low mileage engine"

Cheaper 02 Boxster with 59,000 miles for $12.5K

Can you still get an extended warranty on a 12 year old car?

Boxster

Talked with Service Manager at dealer which replaced engine.

They got one from a salvage yard and replaced it. No info on miles or condition
from donor car.

Very much as they say.......a pig in a poke

Will pass on this one.

Have three real nice 2000 Boxster "s" in area and none of the owners will budge from $19000.00.

FYI
I just sold a 99 with a new OEM motor 87k total on car, 38k on new motor. I ended up letting it go for 10,200. It was very very well serviced (new top, clutch, front and rear Aarms brakes ect) It had a clean carfax, but had the front resprayed very nicely due to rock chips.

Whether the engine was "rebuilt" (not likely) or swapped from a junker or a crate motor, its still no guarantee it won't either 1) be fine for another 100K miles or 2) blow up without warning.
