Fair price for Turbo Fuchs?
 

So i have these wheels that came on my '83 euro 930. I'm guessing theyre 16x7 and 16x8, just guessing by the tire sizes (205 front, 245 rear).

They're not perfect, 3 out of 4 have some pitting to them.

What do you guys think a fair price would be if i were looking to sell these?

If they are 7&8s and chrome. I would say they are worth $800 to $1000. If they are 7&9s and chrome $1000 to $1200.

Chrome means total re-finishing for the buyer. $70 to $80/wheel to strip, about $100/wheel to finish and the cost of shipping. Roughly another $1000 after wheels are purchased.

Just so i'm clear - Even in their current state with defects in the current chrome, i could fetch roughly $800? Or is that price after a total re-finish?

The process to chrome a Fuch significantly weakens it. I would talk with Al Reid or Harvey Weidman about a refinish and appropriate disclaimer.

Actually, Harvey weighed in on the subject not long ago. I will try to find the thread. He stated he in fact does re-finish these wheels all the way back to stock anaodized finish. He did not mention any weakening due to the process. Al Reed will in fact strip them, but at the time of my dicussion with him, he would not re-anodize them.

You may be right. I have just read for years that the chemical process of chroming and de-chroming reacts negatively with the base material. That is why I suggest contacting Al or Harvey for advice.

and I paid $850.00 (7's & 8's) last month. I think Macroni was spot on in current pricing for straight chromed rims with moderate flaking that need a refinish.

All the recent threads I dug up on the chrome rims seemed to point to the fact that they're almost always salvageable unless they're in really poor condition. Given the current pricing on nice 8's (add a few hundred for 9's), I went the chrome route and decided to save for a proper refinish since many high priced 8's & 9's seemed to need some refinish work anyway.

I saved a bit as it was a local pick up for me. I think mine are in a bit better shape than these, with less pitting, and they had factory painted center caps in good shape.

Pricing on some items is mentally tough for me when they bust the $1K mark, let alone the $2k mark that I seen on some 7's & 9's. I guess I can stomach the lower price to get them, and then save the rest of the coin for a proper refinish of my choice easier than to bust that big nut all at once. I guess it's a strange hang-up of mine.....

I would love to see the issue of possible damage of chroming/dechroming put to rest. Luke, I did a seach on Harvey and chrome with no joy. Could you find the posts your were thinking of and either link or quote what Harvey had to say?

They can be dechromed.

I do believe chroming does (or at least can) make them brittle. I had a set on an SC that the previous owner had chromed, one of them ended up cracking, right along one of the "petals." These wheels were straight, not hit, etc.

The problem with selling wheels like that are they need to have significant $$ put in to make them cosmetically acceptable, since that chrome is shot. I don't know current pricing, but my guess would be $200 each to have them stripped down and refinished.

So, at a $850 purchase price, a buyer would be into the wheels for $1650, plus shipping to the refinisher, etc. And, they'd still be a set of "previously chromed" wheels, which a lot of people would not knowingly buy.

for my set ($850.00), but I was really tired of looking for a set of 8's or 9's - the prices only seemed to be going up, so I decided to take a chance. The ones I picked up are in pretty good shape with little flaking and no pitting (that I can see) or curb damage, and they were local. The strange thing is that I had to look at mine closely to see that they were chromed. I think they tried to make them look stock besides the bright lip - the centers look like they are stock anodized.

On e-bay right now:

1 set of chromed Fuchs 16x7" & 8", bid to $999.00
1 set 16 x 7" & 9" in white, asking $4,149.00 (Holy cow!)
1 set 16 x 7" & 8", asking $2,695.00
single 16 x 9", $1,407.00

I'm not sure what the people who chromed these beautiful rims were thinking, I'm definitely not much for bling and I certainly don't think a Porsche is a bling platform.

I kinda think I'm "saving" (or at least trying to save) a set from the scrap heap, like saving a rusty 911....

I read that as performed by an expert such as Harvey chrome wheels are fine for use after refinish.....
