Should I sell now ?

A few years back I bought a pristine 88 carrera with 128k. Honestly the car is near perfect. Arctic white, matching wheels, flawless original paint ( seriously) and the interior, camel, shows absolutely no wear. Question: Since I bought the car for an investment and can stand to keep it around, would I be making a mistake to sell it now? Does anyone see this car being worth much more in the future. I'm rounding up some money to buy some property, but the car doesn't need to go if it has a good future price tag. :

Well.. whats a good price tag? How much on of a return are you looking to make? Since you don't mention what you paid for it, its hard to tell if you will actually "make money". My guess is that unless you bought froma depressed owner during or imediately after the market collapses a few years ago, you won't be making any money on it.

I bought the car for 17k. I don't see a lot for sale, but have seen upwards of 25k. Are there any key things that would make this car "rare" ? I know there are a lot of them out there, but do you think low 20's is about the ceiling for this model?

I don't think an 88 Carrera with 128k miles is going up in value for a long time. Depending on your age, your children or grandchildren might see some appreciation if you keep the car in pristine condition. Drive it, and if you're lucky you'll get most of your initial investment back plus the intangible benefits and pleasure associated with owning and enjoying a Porsche. Rarely does owning a car make sense as a pure investment.

A 128K car will likely not fetch top dollar. It may sell for what you are into it for....

Cheers

Do you think it will make much of a difference if I put another 20k in miles on it? What do you feel is the big mileage price killer for my car?

a "collector" wants a low mileage example... Low it likely sub 50K miles and more likely sub 20K miles. A 150K miles example is not an investment. Its an old used car. Sorry. Unless you've spent money on it, or the previous owner has, I question how "perfect" it is. Top end rebuild yet? Suspension refreshed yet? Clutch? Transmission? How's the interior holding up? (any tears? bubbling? etc etc).

To many out here these are items that must/should be addressed or reasoned away as to why they are not needed.

Drive it and enjoy it. All but the lowest mileage/rarest examples of the 3.2 (say M491 and Clubsport) are drivers, not collectors.

Personally I think that now is not a good time to sell. I bought my 3.2 ('85 coupe with 120K miles) last Spring and I'm glad I did. I put 5K miles on it last year and don't regret it one bit. I know it's worth at least what I paid for it, but likely not any more than that.

Time will eventually diminish the supply of good 3.2s and that may eventually drive the price up. I don't see a "longhood" situation in the future for 3.2s though - there were just too many made. However an aircooled Porsche in great condition will always be a desirable car to the right enthusiast, and there are a lot of us.

Cheers

With 128K miles on it, you'd be lucky to get what you paid for it.

Now, or at any time over the next half decade.

"Low 20s" is not the ceiling for the model. If you have a pristine G50 Carrera with all records, all original, and 20K miles on it, you'll get in the 30s for it.

But your car has a ceiling on it, b/c of the miles (and, also, white/tan isn't the greatest for resale). Mid/upper teens is that ceiling.

I think top dollar for the car is probably around $15k due to the mileage. If it needs any work, the price drops. You might as well drive the car and enjoy it. Just remember that repairs are a part of the cost of ownership.

Enjoy the car and don't sweat it

Sounds like you have a good car, but as others have said above if you don't need the money now keep it. I would not expect a return on the back side; typically the only return is owning and entertaining a hobby/interest with alot of smiles and grins with every drive.
