relative value in upgrading a 1978 targa

I need some advice from those who are familiar with early sc's and 91-96 911's. I am considering replacing my 1978 911 targa with a newer model. I am thinking it might be more cost effective to replace than to bring mine up to new status.
My concern is that the 78 has been such a bullet proof car. It is a white targa with fair original paint and no dents. The engine has been spectacular. In 22 years I have had one tune up and a new clutch along with some seal replacement. A 100k it runs like a clock. It has never had any major repairs in it's history.
Am I going to see some substantial benefits in owning a newer model or should I spend a few thousand on new upholstery and put the air back in service? It has ample power for me. I could use some creature comforts though. The picture is 15 yrs old but not too far off current condition.

Do you like Targas? How much? In years '91 to '96 you are talking about two different cars, the 964 (Targa available), and 993 (No real Targa). Search your soul, and it will be revealed to you.

its going to be more cost effective to put 3k or 4k into yours, you know what you have already, any new car could be hiding problems

I actually like the appearance of the targa more than I like to take the top off. My car probably needs new seat upholstery (front), air compressor rebelted and recharged, and some paint touchup in out of the way areas. The radio needs updating. The targa seals need updating as I am getting a leak. It should take about about 3500 or more. I could also stand to update the chain tensioner and install a popoff box. I think I need to have an assessment by my mechanic before I make a decision.

Thanks for the advice.

I also have a 1991 300sl which has been a money pit. It is going this spring.

Don't forget to refinish those Fuchs. I say keep the old girl. They only become more rare and enviable with age. For many years, longhoods were thought of with disdain.. now they are the holy grail. SC's wont reach holy grail status, but they will always be admired.

If you want better HVAC and Power steering, look for a 964 Targa.
