Look in the latest issue of Excellence, they rate the 73t coupe at low $ 20,900 to high $31,800 up
$500 from last year. I find this a little higher than what's selling out there. $5000-$25,000 more in line with rebuildable examples.

We should take this information machine out on the road. There isn't anything we can't figure out or find out.

as i remember the oil pressure, when hot, wasnt that high, at idle, running i think around 40 psi. guess the big thing in the motor would be the condition of the crankshaft. from what i understand there chromed and cant be turned, if bad. but then motormieser, cant remember if thats spelled right, will rebuild it for under $5000.00. sorry about no pics. just picture a 73 911t thats been outside in the arizona sun for many many years. shade screens in the windows. never been hit. knida a barn find, but smokes. cracked dash pad, good seats and door panels. straight as all get out and no rust. i paid $4750.00 many years ago and a man wants it rally bad, offered me $6000.00.

Without seeing the car, and a pretty vague description, I would think $6k is pretty low. Minimum $10k if no rust and it drives.

I have never used motor meister, but enough bad stories about them for me to avoid them.

Those numbers appear strong for a car that sounds tired.
I would think this to be a mid to high teens.

any shop is going to have good and bad posts, there still in business so they have to be doing something right. anyway they gave me a total of $5200.00 for everything, thats them picking the car up and delivery, also going through the transmission and MFI. turn key. so i figure $4750.00 i paid and another $5200.00 for a rebuilt engine, well thats $9750.00 for a porsche thats pretty much new, also includes a new clutch. now i figure thats a pretty good deal, seeing a they are going for more than that with a stock motor with miles on it and who knows how many miles left until a rebuild will be needed. anyway im going for it.

Before you drop off your car and your $, search this forum for issues related to MM. In your area there are more than enough shops without the negativity that surrounds MM. I'm on the east coast so I have no experience either way, but an afternoon of reading about them here should at least give you an idea of thier reputation. Just my $.02...

Be carefull, if you use MM and people on this board find out then when it comes to selling the car, then they will move on. Personally I would not let them change a tire on my car.
Good luck.

Let me give you some friendly advice--you will be better off,IMO, not having any work done by the shop you mentioned (MM) and let the new owner choose the rebuilder himself. Good quality long hoods are in demand and even though it may be a bit tired, can bring a decent price even if needing a rebuild. All rebuilds are not the same--quality trumps price every time. Anyone interested in your car, who is knowledgeable , will discount their offer if the drive train has been touched my MM.

Seriously, do a search on MM here and on Google and you will understand the reaction of people to the mention of their name, regardless of what you read on their website. No one was making fun of your spelling. They were pointing out a potential problem with your proposed plan.

My friend, you car, your money, your choice.

That said, some food for thought. A quality rebuild of a 911 motor at a respected shop typically costs $10-20,000. Why so much you ask? A few factors to consider:

1-Parts-Assuming you do not need new pistons and cylinders or con rods or other parts that typically have a 200,000+ mile service life, you will pay about $2,000-2,500 for the other stuff you will need including basic machine work for your heads. If you want to price the parts yourself, you can, just use our hosts "Wizard" to make an estimate. You can find the Wizard here: Porsche 911 Engine Rebuild Wizard - Introduction

2-Other Machine work- Early 911 motors such as yours are built with a Magnesium alloy crankcase. Over the years these cases tend to stress relieve and when the two halves are separated, tend to warp. There are shops that can machine the cases to eliminate the warp and properly align bore the case. This can add $1,000's to the bill.

3-Per many experts, plan on 40 to 60 hours of labor for an EXPERIENCED mechanic to tear down, measure and reassemble the motor. At $50/hr, this is a labor bill of $2,000-$3,000. Most mechanics charge more and the labor costs are corresponding higher.

So far we are at about $6,000 with a $50/hr mechanic ($7,500 with a $75/hr mechanic).

Your guy will give you a new clutch and refresh your transmission as well for the price quoted.

Lets see what that does.

Transmission-Most transmission take about 10-12 hours of labor plus parts to refresh. Figure at least another $1,000 for this work including parts (same cheap $50/hour fellow).

Clutch-The cost of the new clutch should only be the cost of parts. Per our host, a standard clutch kit is about $700 plus you will most likely need a new flywheel ($400) or resurface the one you have ($100).

So now our expected price is around $8,000 (using are $50/hr mechanic). If your mechanic charges $75/hr, the cost rises to $9,600.

I am being fairly optimistic that the engine will only need a basic freshing, not major corrective work to be back to "as new condition" and an expected service life of 150-200,000 miles.

If you have internal damage to the engine, these costs can rapidly escalate from the cost of parts or addtional labor needed for corrective actions.

You decide.
