1987 911 Porsche Targa

I am in negotiations on the purchase of a 1987 911 Targa with 80k miles and would like to gain a better understanding of the cars true market value. I am having a PPI performed on 4/22. The car is located in Dallas, spent most of it's history in Iowa and appears to have a clean Car Fax. The car is listed on cars.com and craigslist, posted 4/12. Comments welcome.

If it's the blue one, it's WAY overpriced. I just bought an 86 sunroof coupe with 70k miles, clean PPI including compression/leakdown, rebuilt tranny and new clutch, new shocks, 9.5/10 paint and 9/10 interior. $18500, about a month ago. Targas should be a bit cheaper, especially considering they represent about 75% of what's available right now.

Keep looking.

If its as good as described and checks out, it's only worth what your willing to pay. If the body is nit pic 100% original and perfect, mechanically checks out, books and service records can be backed up and you still see a cosmoline coated engine bay, thats a nice car for the money.

Prices are all over the map. The 87 to 89 appeal to many for having the Getrag trans and other minor improvements. There are also ratty 1989's selling for $35K.... I also find clean 87's in the upper teens. I also see whacked and hacked early targa's with owners hoping to get $25K.

On to the discussion of Targa's and values. I'm a coupe guy but that doesn't mean anything. Almost all price guides show open top Porsches including Targa's higher valued than a coupe. If you like a Targa like many others, your'e happy and thats all that matters. If it indeed meets my first paragraph, I doubt one would lose money on it.

The price is certainly All The Money for a Targa. Don't care for the interior colour either, personally. Carrera 3.2's with G50 nowadays are high teens/low twenties at best except for the aberrations (super-low mileage or M491s). Super-low mileage means 40k miles or less.

Cheers
