Price of 912?
Guys,
I have an opprotunity to purchased a 1969 912. The owner says that the engine was rebuild 7000 miles ago. Overrall the car has zero rust and every solid. The dash has 1 small crack but other than that the car is pretty clean. It is not concourse but a nice drive. Gear shift smoothly and motor runs strong with a small leak. What do you guys think? Owner is asking 10K. I will add pictures but any feedback is greatly appreciated. I would want to act on this if price is right. ![]() ![]() ![]() I am taking a step back from previous owning of 911. $10k might be on the high side, especially as a weekend driver. I'm always skeptical of the claim of zero rust, especially on a 40+ year old car. If you get it on a lift or pull all the carpets up I'll bet you'll find something that needs attention.
For me, history/receipts on these older cars is important. I'd be leary of any car without history and you might want to follow up with whoever did the rebuild 7000 miles ago. On the positive side these cars are fun to drive and easy to work on. You'd be crazy not to have a full PPI done by someone who knows the early cars. Best $300 - 500 insurance policy you can buy.

Prices for 912s have been on the rise - probably due to the rise of longhoods. I think $10K is reasonable for a solid driver with decent cosmetics. Be sure to get the paperwork on the engine rebuild the cost of engine work on a 912/356 is high. I second the recommendation on the PPI and would be inspect the car for rust in all of the usual 911 places.
I also recommend checking the numbers on the car (engine /chassis) to see if it's a matching car. This will help elevate the value of the car. |

Thanks for the feedback guys. I did not do a PPI but trust drove the car and is pulls strong. Usual oil leaks, under carriage is clean, under carpet is also clean. Only saw 1 coat of paint. No visible bubbles that I can see. Interior is very clean with upgrade on the seats to Carreras and radio other than that nothing else. Still working on price.

Do a PPI
If you don't do a PPI it would be a mistake. There is no better way to negotiate on price, but also the PPI done by an independent who knows the 4 banger will be able to tell you what to expect down the road.

It sounds like a nice car. With mediocre 356 B's bringing $30k, I think it's only a matter of time until 912's creep up in price as well.
They lack a bit of the 356 "old time charm," but they drive/handle very good with less weight slung out back. They won't sound as good (or be as quick) as a 911, but if you can get past that and enjoy it for being a fun little car with good handling characteristics, I'm sure you will be happy with it. If it checks out, $10k is very fair. Get a PPI though, it's money well spent. |

Thanks guys!!! Is a done deal she's got a new daddy. I am the proud owner of this 69' 912 in Ivory White. She drives nice. As you all mention it's not as fast as a 911 but when you are driving something nice you want to slowwww down. I will shared pictures this weekend. This is an awesome forum. Thanks everyone for the quick feedback. Oh, PPI came through fine and owner reduce the cost from the 10K which makes it even better.
