Highest auction price of a '73 2.0 in the condition you describe was $24K about 3 years ago before the economy went in the ****ter. I haven't seen or hear of a stock 4 pulling over $20K in the years since.

'76 will almost always pull less $$ due to less desireability vs a similar '73 or '74 2.0

I beg to slightly differ with racer. In the same 3 years, price of new, or high quality used, parts for 914 has gone up quite a bit. It will cost a lot more to fix-up (restore) a 914 correctly than their commonly perceived value in the market place. So, if you find a high quality 914, it won't be cheap. Furthermore, 914 prices aren't as susceptible to dips in the economy since they haven't even begun to really clime yet. The nicest and most desirable 914 will still cost no more than a Honda Accord. I remember when a nice Dino could be bought for $25K since they weren't considered to be real Ferraris; then their value took off and you couldn't touch a decent Dino for less than $150K. At that price point, the pricing would be more significantly impacted by the economy, same as a long hood 911S I suppose.

So, in a nut shell, I find racer's pricing right on; however, I am not sure if 914 prices are any lower than they were 3 years ago.

Just my humble opinion.

I bought and sold my 100k mile 1976 that was a concours winner (but in defense, had a roll cage installed) for $12K. Malage red over black. Factory injected. 914 Fuchs wheels. no cracks in dash or facotry seats, excellent original carpets, no battery box rust. solid jack points etc

imho, the pricing hierarchy for 914s is:

1) 914-6
2) 73-74 2.0
3) ??? imho, after the first two, it comes down to overall condition and personal preference. I might choose a perfect '72 1.7 over a similar '75 1.8 simply cause I don't like the "big bumper" cars (weight increase and aesthetics)

Given the depressed markets in general, and the fact that many still percieve 914s as not "full porsches" (an opinon I abhore) they will never be worth more than a 911. They are only even or slightly more valuable than the 944 series cars.

Best way to determine value is to let the market speak (auction) or at least consult NADA classic guides. Not sure Excellence posts 914 prices all that often.

Color?

If it's an interesting color, add a few thousand.

Red, white, black, silver cars should be around $15 - $18k (mint low mile, no wrecks). Clean & well sorted 914's are great little cars.

I'd take any post '73 914 over the horrible shifting early 1.7 liter versions. I had a friend who had a bright green '71 1.7, talk about a stick in an ice bucket - that shifter was an insult to ice buckets! I can't believe any modern manufacturer, let alone Porsche or VW, released a car that shifted that poorly! My 50k mile '76 shifted o.k., but not great.

I paid $5k for my '76 in 1981. I sold it for $6.5k in 1986, one of the few cars I made money on. It was Ancona blue with black interior with the cloth plaid inserts. The cloth inserts were especially fragile - I replaced mine after they wore through to the foam on or about 1982. If it has the plaid inserts, I'd say it's pretty rare, I have yet to see one with the original plaid insert interior.....

I do not subscribe to the general point of view that 1973-74 914s are the most desireable. I prefer the 1975-76 versions myself, having owned one of each. I prefer the look of the car with the impact bumpers -- it elongates the proportion, making it seem less boxy. And the smooth ends look so much better than cars with nipples -- big protruding bumperettes that scream "after thought." The 1975-76 relocated the fuel pump, have mildly upgraded ventilation and minor interior upgrades. But call me crazy. You can easily increase engine output (and remove smog equipment on the 1975 in California). Last model of the run in mint low miles would be very desireable, particularly with plaid seat inserts and interesting color, with full records. The 914 maket has generally been on the rise for the last decade, but at a much more modest rate than the 911 market.

There are three 914s on the market right now at dealers trying for $15-$20,000... and they have been sitting a long time.

If you are willing to wait a year for the right buyer, i suspect you could get $20,000... most sellers with that car will list it for $30,000 and suffer dozens of low ball offers and tire kickers until they get bored and take the first $20,000 cash in hand they get. You would do well to market it in Europe, where the 914 is well considered and exchange rates make it a bargain.

How about sharing some pictures just for fun?

IMO, 76's are not valuable as they need to be smogged in CA and therefore people shy away.

If your car is perfect, it might be worth in the 20's, but you also have to find the right buyer.

Iv seen the one for sale in Kirkland. It is not as listed. There are none factory parts (wheels, door strips, and something i cant remember ) and the car has had a detail job.

Point is LOOK over the low mile cars very carefull. I would think 10k-14k for an optioned 74,76 with ac.
