996
What is a good purchase price range for a 2002 996 with 6 speed and 19 thousand miles? Also-are these cars afflicted with the dreaded RMS/IMS failures? Thanks for your answers.

1) RMS/IMS afflicts ALL M96 motors (ie, 986 boxster, 996, and early 987/997 models)
RMS = Rear Main Seal - usually not a big problem IMS = InterMediate Shaft - usually means a new motor when it fails. '02 and newer have a different front bumper/valance and headlights. Also have the 3.6L motor. 19K miles? sounds hardly used. One school of thought is that low mile cars are more susceptible to IMS failure due to their lack of use and that a Higher mile 996 might be a better choice. It will be many years, imho, till a 996 gains in resale value, so I wouldn't necessarily put a price premium on a low mile example. LN Engineering offers an IMS "fix". IIRC, its about $2K for parts and labor to replace, but it might be a better spent $2K than spending for an aftermarket warranty.

I have also heard that the low mileage cars are more likely to have the IMS failure. I would try offer $3,000 less and get the update.

2002-2004 had the 3.6, which appear to be less problematic than the 1999-2001 models. Pricing depends on many factors, coupe or cab, man or tip tans, options, service records, etc.

Depending on model and options $25-35K. Service history good. See if any warranty work was done for RMS or IMS. If multi RMS replacements, run away. Small % of total cars had any IMS issues but it still could be a problem. Most failures have occured with under 50K miles based on what I've read. Like mentioned above, LNE retro fit bearing replacement = peace of mind.
