Price Advice on 930
Hi guys,
I'm looking to purchase my first 930, an '86 4-speed turbo, and could use some advice. I found a red/black one not far from me with 31,xxx miles on it. The good: All stock, two owners, all service paperwork. No problems during the test drive, shifts smooth, clutch grabs good, wheel is straight. Paint and interior are spotless and barely look used. Clean carfax. Factory heated seats option. Local. The bad: The original radio doesn't work and factory alarm has been disconnected. Neither of these really bother me at all. About 15 years ago he hit the rear driver's side fender while parking it. He had it fixed and the repair looks good with paint color matching perfectly, looking really really closely in the right light you can see that it doesn't have the factory orange peel and is smoother though. Also the black bumper molding is wrinkling at the top edge on that same side while the other side lays flat and neat against the bumper. The car overall is really clean and original and drives well. It feels like a new car, I was impressed with the condition of it. Shame about the repair but after 15 years nothing has come up yet. Assuming it checks out mechanically, what do you guys think it is worth (I know this is hard without pictures, I will try to get some up later)? He is asking $39.5k and won't move from that price. Too much or is this a fair price? |

Depends!!
If it is the color you want and the PPI checks out, the mileage and history all are consistant with the price. Because of the body work, I would include having it checked out by a good body guy. Aso see the post below on the value of 930's for what he is insisting on, service records should also be there. Go over to the 930 forum on renn list and do some searches. Good luck and did I mention PPI? ![]() |

I think the price is fair, but when I was looking for my 930 I refused to deal with bodywork. You have one chance to buy a special car, my opinion is don't deal with re-paints and bodywork. In the 80's porsche had a 26 step finishing and paint process. Very hard to replicate..
Yes send it to a good body shop and get an opinion if you're serious, best of luck.. |

The paint and metal conditioning process shlobeck mentions is amazing. I happened to read about it recently when I found a 1986MY sales brochure , I had packed away.
I'm sure this process , or something similar was in effect much earlier. And in fact when reading about the galvanizing process. I realised I will never be stripping a 1976MY or later car down to bare metal via blasting or sanding. If possible , I will going over existing paint by sealing. I don't ever want to remove any of the galvanizing coating. The factory states that if you get a scratch to bare metal on any of their galvanized bodywork . That surrounding galvanizing particles will actually "migrate" to the metal were they have been removed. I will post the page explaining it sometime. |

Orange peel
Interesting comment on "factory orange peel", is this true.
My 1986 930 black/black has some orange peel and never wrecked. But if their factory paint is so good why the orange peel? Later |
