barn find 1976 Carrera

I am new to this site and just found a 76 911 that is in need of attention parked at a junkyard in a rural area. I am told it is a 3.0 Carrera. It appears to be all there, and I am told it will run. Interior is in pretty rough shape, needs new carpet, headliner, door panels, seats need recovering. Interior is leather with looks like tartan cloth inserts in the seats and the door panels. Exterior shows some minor surface rust where the paint is cracked and is in bad need of a paint job. It appears that underneath, engine, and trunk (front) area is rust free, and we couldn't find any body damage, other than where the paint is cracked. Engine is all there but I am sure at this point needs a rebuild. All gages are in KM and appear to be european. Gages say "druck" and "oel".

I am very interested in the car, but have no idea of its value and if it is worth restoring. Any ideas of $ for engine/tranny rebuild? Is it worth a second look, or is it not a desirable enough car to persue?
I can post pictures if needed.

Any help is appreciated.
THANKS!

First things first. Get the VIN, then the engine #. That will tell you if it is a real Carrera.

Interior - $3k - 5k
Paint - $5k - $8k+
Engine/tranny - ????

Engine:$10,000-15,000
Tranny: $2500-5,000

Expect to spend at least $50k to restore it. If you can get it for the right price, it will be worth every cent of it. But if you pay too much because it's a "special" car, you'll be in it upside.

$5K? The worst the owner can do is counter-offer...

I guess I need a history lesson

What is special about this car? I take it it's not a regular mid-year?

It's Euro market. It's a 3.0l engine that predates the 911sc. It's not MFI like an early RSR 3.0l, but it's a somewhat unique vehicle with limited numbers made.

Can anyone give me some suggestions of what to do or not do trying to get it started? I am told that it will start and run, but won't idle long. Don't know much about Porsches but willing to learn if I can get it for the right price.

Have you looked around under the car and in the fenders. What are we looking at here in the way of rust?

If you can determine if that color is the original , and the jams don't need to be redone. That brings your cost down on any needed paint . IF you are staying with original color when restoring.

Don't work on it to make run until you aquire it. You make it work / look better . The price goes up.

As suggested , at $5-6K you cannot get hurt. Bring some green & offer.

Body No. should be 660 (4th - 6th digits)

Motor 666 (1st - 3rd digits)

Whoa, whoa, whoa ,hold your horses ...it does appear to be euro since there's no side marker
light and non-sunroof,also gauges and tartan interior usually indicates ROW (non US del)
But that fan and engine don't look right for a three liter more like a US thermal reactor style and a 3.0 Carrera didn't start until '77.
A Euro Carrera '76 would be an MFI 2.7 which this is not, also passenger side mirror looks a
little wonky maybe a late '75 early '76 911 S with added flares, check the wheel wells.
Most pertinent as said previously is VIN and engine numbers to really tell what it is.
I'd offer 2500 'cause it may not be worth that for reals...Bert

OK, still learning some of the details on these cars. Thanks for the info Matt!

The standard production 1976 Carrera was 3L.

1093 coupes & 479 targas produced. The numbers to check I gave previously are correct.

The fan is confusing me. It should be 5 blade , but I see 6 ? I have never heard of , nor seen (at least that I remember) 6.

A Five blade fan should be correct. The tartan interior is very desirable, plus I'm not sure because of the split stitching, but I think its got the Carrera 'Fatty' steering wheel with correct raised hub.

Question for Ratbox : is it on 7&8" x 15" Cookies. Did the 3.0 come like that?

1976 & 77 Carrera 3L cars , had 7" & 6" cookie cutters as standard fitment. Other wheels could be optioned .

Save that Tartan interior! That alone would have me interested in the car. Do a search on the technical side here on starting a car that has been sitting for a long time before you try and start it. If the rust is minimal and the price is right, I'd seriously consider it.

Again Ratbox knows much more on this, but it looks from the pics like the spoiler might not be correct.
While you are gathering info, John Glynn who posts here has a lovely Orange example of the Carrera 3.0, well worth checking out for inspiration.
