1977 911 Euro Carrera 3.0 litre - Brake Upgrade?

Dear All,

I have put some cash aside and would like to upgrade my brakes
on my 1977 911 Euro Carrera 3.0 litre.

I do the odd amount of club track work, but nothing serious. I have
been told to install the 930 turbo brakes, but would appreciate any
advice from what others have done and what works well.

Thanks for looking and the advice if available, Cheers PB

I've got the 930 brakes on my 1970 911E for track work and they are great.

If you are using 16 or 17" wheels, you might consider big reds as well - I think they are cheaper than the 930 setup, but you can't run 15" rims with them.

Regards,
Andrew M

Aren't Boxster S 4-pots also an option? I thought that was a cheap upgrade a lot of guys have started doing.

You might also try the auto-x and motorsports forum.

930 brakes would be a great improvement but they do not come cheap.

I've read mixed reviews on the Boxster set-up for DE use....all you are doing is adding larger calipers to the same 911 (smaller than Boxster) disk so it might help in pad wear but not in superior braking. If you go with both Boxster calipers and rotors that might be worth it....Boxster S better still.

Before you do anything, I'd start with Hawk Blues or similar and a high boiling point fluid. Then add brake cooling......that helps in a huge way. With Hawks and Super Blue, I would loose the pedal on hot days after 20 minutes. With cooling, I have never lost the brakes on the track and get longer pad wear........it is a lot cheaper than a 930 set up.

What is it about your brakes you don't like? Do they fade too much? Are they too small under 17" wheels?

Are they original brakes to the car? How recent has pads/lines/fluid been changed out? What are you running?

How much AIR are you getting to them?

Consider also your skill level. It is possible that you are currently "overbraking" and learning more skills could also reduce the issues you are having.

I'm having brake problems on my '76 Euro Carrera 3.0 also. After 3 or 4 track days, the front rotors warp such that the steering wheel vibrates left and right 2 or 3 inches. I'm thinking cryogenic rotors or bigger brakes. I'm using original calipers with Zimmerman rotors and cooling ducts. I'm open to suggestions. Racer, what do you mean by "over braking"? I'm thinking I could be guilty?

Hey Trains - if you are new to track driving, you are overbraking. Everyone does it (or else they'd be hitting walls, right?) Don't worry too much about it as you will learn your way out of it.

Focus on the brake system first. How old is the fluid? the lines? the pads? the rotors? What kind of tires are you running? Most importantly, are you getting AIR to the brakes?

As for warping, it is possible that your issue is PAD material depositing on the rotors. I've not had much experience first hand, but have know several folks who have switched brake pad brands/compounds and noticed significant changes in "warping" rotors.
