Value of 1999 911 - Wacky

Hello, I have been following the values of 911's for about a year. The market seems somewhat steady and sensical except for the 1999 Porsche. The range seems to be about 18k to 40k. Is there something about this model/year that isn't obvious to a newbie? What are the factors in the range? Why would a 1999 go for the same as a similar 1985? Thanks!

First year - Model for the 996 water cooled Porsche...

Many know issues with engines (Rear Main Seal and others issues)...

Sometimes the cost of repairs can be almost what the value of the car is or close to it.

This has also happened to the Boxster series of the late 90's.

I guess people car ask what they'd like for a car... But I tend to think these cars are should be valued at the lower end of the range 16k-20k ish ... depending on mileage and condition

It sure seems like a lot of car for the money, provided the repairs can be done by the owner. Are they decent cars regardless? Has anyone retrofitted a 3.2?

Besides the mechanical problems, it's body style is not too desirable. They are a dime a dozen, I've seen some as low as 13-14 k. A friend if mine has one, when I park my 86 coupe next to his 99, its kind of obvious why they are so abundant! Plastic and lacking character!

I own a very early 1999 996 (was delivered in April of 98). I am the second owner and have put nearly 75,000 miles on the car in the last 10 years. The car has required nothing other than normal wear and tear items and now has 95,000 miles on the odo. I have not had any IMS bearing or RMS leakage issues. I am about to replace the clutch and will do the IMS bearing at the same time. I also own several early 911's, a 964 cab and a 993 cab. Is my 996 "better" than my other Porsches? In some ways yes, and in some ways no. It has been a great, reliable, fast, powerful and attractive car, and has held up well over the years. I still enjoy driving the car. When you consider that decent examples can be bought between $15k - $20k, they are a great value. It's hard to find so much car for so little money anywhere else right now. There are plenty of them out there (one of the reasons for the cheap price) so you can be picky too!
