I'm considering converting my 2.7 CIS to MFI, (I know big $$), or swapping to a '78 3.0 I've got. Which way to go to make it a more desirable car? Slightly tweaking the originality of the 2.7 but keeping original #'s or go w/the simpler solution, the superior 3.0 w/CIS? Although it is a Targa, it's still the rarest of the '74/'75's only 173 built and it was also owned (documented) by a former Cal/NFL QB, which might make it desired in my area. It also was a custom color which was shot at the factory and now needs repainting. Any thoughts?

if you think the former owner and low number built/ color
is the main value KEEP THE CAR STOCK looks like you have other cars to play with anyway |

More desirable to whom?
If resale and investment are important to you, then leave it bone stock. If its just for ****s/giggles, stuff in the SC motor, but keep the original matching 2.7 for future resale. While it would be nice to have an MFI motor, (it will be $$$$), it doesn't seem as simple as putting in a 3.0 that you have available and an MFI motor isn't "correct" for the car anyway. |

I remember a 75 Targa Carrera about 20 plus years ago that I rode in that belonged to a NFL player in the Bay Area. I dont remember who it was though and I wonder if its the same car. Its seems to me the name may have been Plunkett or Stabler. I think the latter. I remember riding in the car down in San Jose and seeing the name on the original Manuel that came with the car.

It was Steve Bartkowski's car. I've owned it since '85.

Thats right.....Steve B's name is the one. We took it out for a test drive when it was for sale at Alex's Porsche House in Campbell, Ca. We ended up buying a brand new SC instead. I dont remember the color of it anymore.....was actually in 1978 when we drove it. I do remember that it was a pretty nice car back at the time. I would keep that car as close to stock as possible. You could run the 3.0 in it and keep the 2.7 ready if you ever sell it.

It's a light metallic blue, as close as I can figure it's a '74 VW color because the paint code doesn't come back to anything, which meant it was a custom color done at the factory.

Yup....light blue. Its coming to me now. Wow, amazing that is still around after all these years. That was almost 30 years ago I saw your car. You still have records dating back that far?

I've just got the owners manuel with his signature in it. All of the maintenance records start with me. I bought it from a guy in Sonoma, who'd sucked a valve. It had been sitting in a barn for over a year, the engine & trans were out. I took a bit of a chance buying it like that but I already had a new set of P's & C's and everything except for that one head was o.k.
