Backdate cost
 

I wonder what it would cost to color change this to blut and clearcoat the trim, change the mirrors - maybe the rims - seems like a steal to me!

Agreed. It really does look like all the hard work is done. With a couple of cosmetic things : the brightwork and a more classic look to the Fuchs it seems like a steal.
I think it's crying out for lights on the hood and some graphic work.
Wish I had room and money for another.

Raw parts costs add up. Fenders are going to cost $5-700 each, either bought 'ready to use' or made 'ready to use.' A steel hood can be $250, but requires changing the short hood latching setup ($$$). To avoid that, buy the fiberglass hood with the latch mount moved. That's $700 or so. You need turn signal housings and lenses. Figure $280 for repro parts. You'll need a front bumper @ $300 or so. So raw parts for the front (using the backdate hood) are $1280-1680. Rear bumper is around $300, but if your reflector is good, you can sell that off. In fact you could get lucky and find someone to buy bumpers hood and fender...

I think the key here is whether the backdate potentially adds value. To some folks it does. Others see it as neutral or negative.

One thing is for sure: you'll cut about 80 lbs off the car if you do it the way I did. And that's never a bad thing.

Oh, and the full backdate (mirrors, door & window frames) is fabulously expensive, since you have to weld up mirror holes in the doors and replace the window frames & trim. I figure that would add at least +$1500

And this and all of the above prices are with owner labor, not shop labor.

A real long hood may be lighter, but these backdates will be much stiffer (in my experience)

These backdates are really interesting
Get close to a Singer without the $180K
But I guess backdates with real steel fenders like this one will become rare. Can't find rust free fenders any longer.

Budget
 

Brightwork roughly $800; $500 for used front and back side windows and $300 for front and rear window trim from Porsche. You might have to refinish the used components. This is pricy. The black trim you pull you can sell.

Side mirror $125 replica (TRE) they look great.

Paint.... This can be the black hole. They will need to weld up the mirror on the right door. If that is all the repair needed you are looking at anywhere from $4,000 up.

Wheels...... You would need 15s 7&8s.....$1500 with tires.

as proof, I saw this car, in this thread prior to the work, assuming it is the same car, on the commute this morning:

(I have heard that SC's had a brightwork option, but this one had the accordian rubber removed and all fresh brightwork and it was just stunning - don't have an photo, but I will track it down one of these mornings and snag one!)

To me a nice SC or Carreras doesn't need a backdate....

Actually, 1978 and 79 were the last years that the "brightwork" window trim was offered as standard. After that black was standard. By 1980, people felt chrome looked old fashioned. I'd love to have it now.
