Appraisal of this 1979 911sc

Hello everyone,

I am looking into buying my first real car. I have been considering 944t and 911sc, since thats what my procurement budget (not maintenance) budget allows.

But my girl really is not allowing me to buy a turbocharger based car since she says it has more complexity and more points of failure.

Long story short. Saw this car today : https://picasaweb.google.com/100453298220027127376/1979Porsche911SCVeryPresentableDriver13750

Paint is bubbling near the wiper where there is little spacing on front and also here and there. Car runs, but didnt test drive it(stupid me!). Do you think it looks like a fair deal?

Also dealer doesn't have any paperwork/receipts and wont allow car to leave garage for PPI, but welcomes anyone to come to garage to inspect it and put on lift and such.

Thumbs down

Run now! Won't allow an off site ppi? Seems like rust is also an issue from the bubbling. No history on car? Don't even consider this car. Look on this site for a car with a history and no one here will ever deny you a ppi of your choosing. There are too many nice scs or 3.2 for your price range. I know you posted this in the correct section but there's not much action here. Probably would get more responses in 911 tech forum. I can assure you, most will agree with me. Good luck, Tim

No PPI : there is a reason, and it's not a good one .
There is a thread about unpleasant experiences with Merit cars somewhere on here.

Frankly I am ok with it. But as per me, its easier to fix cosmetics than mechanicals and they wont let me PPI it outside for that.

I found a few comments, Google merit cars pelican. If you are willing to spend up to 20 k, there are tons of cars that are way SMARTER buys. Don't let emotions get in your way. This car spells trouble. Be patient and look at as many cars as you can. It would be worth the shipping cost for you to try and buy a car from the west coast (rust free). Don't be duped. Tim

Engine number in the photos indicates the case is from a 1969 911E

Update as noted below - My bad on this one, motor is likely correct for the car.

Type Merit Cars into the search function on this section of the BBS. What the first poster says is absolutely accurate in describing the shop.

Generally, the 629 sequence indicates a 69 motor, but it is possible that this could be the correct 79 motor as I reflect a bit more, so I may have mis-spoke. Need the engine type number or case part number to be sure.

Also they are not really against PPI, but want PPI to be done at their shop..

Any one had experiences/reviews on these people as PPI agents? They have them listed on their website.

Merits website recommends them? I think you should buy the car, its obvious you really want it, but don't pay a penny over 7 k. All things considered, that's all its worth. Tim

Yes and I can pretty much guarantee you there is more that may not have bubbled yet. Tim

In pic 34 take a look at the drain hole on the left.

Hey man what you do with your money is up to you. But use the search function here and on the tech forum, and look in the classifieds. Maybe post a WTB state what you want to spend and see what you get back. There's always another Porsche, is there always another $14k in your savings ?

Absolutely agree with you sir. I will post a wtb thread here. I see lot of targas, but I am interested only in coupe. I feel Targas are little too risky for theft and vandalism by tearing through targa top.
