G series Carrera - Why are prices so high?
 

Hello Everybody,
I'm studying old Porsches and I'll be for a while because I'm dreaming of my first one...
I've seen many Late '73 and '74 Carreras commanding high prices, what's all this fuss about?
Are these cars really different from '75 on Carreras or it's just flashy color and stripes?

73's are the last year of the early long nose style which is considered more attractive that the impact bumper cars that started in '74 - it's supply and demand. '75 and '76 had additional pollution equipment and larger 2.7 mag cases which had a variety of issues. Mag cases require additional machine work during a rebuild.

Don't discount race eligibility. 1975 is the cut off for many rallyes etc.

I think '74 has the 7:31 R&P also.

You probably already know that US Spec cars trade very differently from ROW cars.

Just adding some from my limited knowledge. I noticed you are from Italy so the 74 RS Carrera short hood (impact bumper) sold in the ROW is VASTLY different that the one sold in the US. We had a similar body style but a worthless 2.7 CIS engine with 175 HP. The Euro/ROW cars had the same wonderful MFI engine with 215 HP just like the 73 RS. I don’t know the 75 ROW Carrera in regards to engine (I would guess the MFI engine), but we had the same 2.7 cis lump. I do know the 76 Euro Carrera had a 3.0 CIS engine with 205 HP. I have seen a few of these on the market here as they were cheap back in the 80’s grey market days. However most I have seen are rusty because of the salty German roads. So be aware these old 911’s in Europe are rust prone. I am surprised when I read Porsche Brit magazines how many old 911’s are rusty. But I live in an area where rust is not a problem.
In summary the 74 Euro Carrera while not as pretty as the 73, is a real Porsche as it has a real engine, and hence the price. Here in the US the 74-75 Carrera also bring a premium (for rarity I assume) but the engines are uninspiring at best and is nothing I would be interested in personally.

Just to be clear.
The 1973 RS, the 74-76 ROW Carreras all had the 2.7 911/83 210 hp MFI motor. There was also a Carrera 3.0 made (I think starting in 1976) which had, logically, a 3.0. Of the '76 Carreras, most believe 123 were made, and they had special VIN #s. There may have been a few more (police targas).

Intresting, thanks for the info. So there were two Carreras made in 76, the 2.7 MFI (123 made?) and the 3.0 CIS , which I assume a lot more of them were made as I have seem several here in the US?
