thoughts on value of this SC

Seller has it listed at a crazy high price but it is pretty. What is the most you would pay for/value it at?

Porsche 911 SC 1981

He should be reminded that an SC is not an investment, just a toy.

Check out...

The chocolate brown '79 for $13.5K on this (Pelican) forum. It has some miles, but looks great, and has a stack of receipts. That one appears to be a deal....

That's a cool color (really dark brown), when's the last time you saw one of those? It also has the light tan/orange interior that is in good shape.

I wish I had the coin to buy it right now, then I'd have two SC coupes....

If I were shopping, I might offer $22k cash, assuming he's got every receipt from when the car was new, and that the condition is as-stated.

It's a nice car, but that's getting close to 930 money.

nice car but that spoiler ruins it for me!

$26,500 for a fully restored SC might be a deal if you had an alternative SC in mind that you were going to restore to the same standard. Restoration is a very expensive proposition. With SCs, it is normally better to buy someone's restoration than perform one. The brown one looked like an excellent buy @ $13,000. Very nice car.
There was a sand beige restoration of an SC in Excellence magazine that highlighted this very subject.

whiterabbit 03-08-2012 01:45 PM

Depends on the condition and receipts really.

pegasus9 03-08-2012 01:59 PM

If it's as nice as he claims its probably more for someone to keep in their garage and go over it often with a Q-tip.

It looks nice but I'm a driver, not a showroom type.
Agreed it gets you close to 930 money.

I'd sell you my Weissach for that. And it has 87,4xx miles on it with a fresh rebuild that went in at 86,912.

schumicat 03-08-2012 05:25 PM

there is an nice 84 (better engine, brakes, etc.) with 81k miles for less money in the classifieds.

Yes but that darn spoiler. I imagine it isnt that hard to remove, get a new decklid and match the paint but it's a hassle. If I'm spending 20+ on an SC/Carrera i would like it to be as sorted as possible.

1979911sc 03-10-2012 01:57 PM

Looks like he is darn proud of this one and call b.s on the 30 mpg at 90mph! Personally wouldn't pay more than upper teens and it would have to be perfect ...but that is your call

cajun 03-10-2012 03:53 PM

He is going to have a hard time moving that car at that price. There are too many other good Porsche options to be had at 26k.

I could see him asking that kind of money if the car had significantly lower miles.

I've been scouring craigslist, the pcamart, and pelican for a bit and a decent SC, say one that is mostly OEM with 100-125k miles are around 16-18k. If a good deal pops up it's purchased almost immediately by a reseller and then relisted for 2-3k more.

This one just strikes me as nice because it is well sorted. You've got the motor recent rebuilt and a fresh repaint (a negative to some) of a rare color. I think it is worth low-mid 20's depending on receipts and in-person condition. It costs so much darned money to buy the mid to upper teens car and pay to have all that work done.

resale red, yuck! Saw that on searchtempest.com though.

thank you for mentioning.

The seller's price is high. I get it, he's trying to recapture the money he has into the car. Nothing wrong with that, but it's usually tough to do unless you stole the car to begin with and then did a lot of the work yourself. Even if everything is as nice as seller claims, my issues would be the following:

Repaint is a negative for me. This is a personal thing, but I want to see original, even if not perfect paint. This may not be a problem for you, but from a resale standpoint, original paint is usually always better.

The mileage is not high relatively speaking, but it's high for this price point. I bought my '83 SC Targa, Chiffon White over Cadbury brown (dk. brown) with 45,XXX original miles for $22K. Paint is original with exception of rt. front fender due to being scratched, interior is original with zero rips, tears, cracks, etc. Original AC works very well. Engine is dry and tight and all upgrades were done. Fuchs are blemish free. Leakdown numbers were 4% or less across the board. It is a really, really nice time capsule/survivor. The car you're looking at is probably every bit as nice, but when you can say "45,XXX original miles..." there is more value there than 145,XXX miles even if both cars perform the same.

At the price I paid I knew I was paying top dollar for a private party sale, but about $6000 below retail at the time.

What is your plan for the car? If you plan to keep it awhile then flip, this probably isn't the car to do that with. There are plenty of mid $teens SC's out there, but as has been stated, they'll all need some work. If this car ticks all the right boxes for you and the repaint and mileage are not a concern, go for it! Just know that you probably won't make any money when it comes time to sell it. But, I hope I'm wrong about that ;)

I want to daily drive it, will likely hold onto it for some time and can get it for $25k. Leakdown is all 3-4%, compression 140-142. Here is a "brag sheet" he sent me on the car.

Over $30K (since his purchase of 17.5k) has been spent on this car, including the following:

pop off valve
carrera chain tensioners
CIS system rebuilt with original Bosch parts
cross drilled rotors
H4 bulbs with trim painted to match
new brake master/booster
new brake vacuum lines
new air conditioning lines
factory rebuilt original bosch fuel distributor
new warm up regulator
new check valve CIS
new air conditioner control switches and thermostat
new pistons, cylinders, valves, heads machined ($9,300)
new clutch
recent tires (less than 3k miles)
extended hub for steering wheel
new show level paint ($7,500) - **my note, show level paint costs waaaay more than 7,500 but it looked good nonetheless.
new rear glass and windshield seals
seat listings rebuilt
custom AC on R12 with a few condensors
cruise control actually works

PLUS additional recent work as of Feb, 2012:
rebuilt factory power antennae
european rear fog light installed
brake system fluid flush
500 mi. fresh engine oil change/valve adjust
new porsche Becker Radio (previous unit internal short)

With all the stuff he did to this car, it kind of makes one wonder what the car looked like when he originally bought it??? New rear window, hmm? Any way you can see pictures of the "before"? If you're going to pay $25K for this car, you're entitled.

At the end of the day, if this car checks out and the PPI verifies that, then write the check and enjoy. Let us know how it goes.

Best of luck!

Greg

Many are regular service items; I am surprised he didn't try to charge you for all the gas he used during ownership.....
